Welcome to the June "On the Blocks"

It is now halfway through the year and MSV swimmers have been incredibly busy - there are 15 MSV swimmers currently leading their respective Age groups in the MSA Swim Series, a successful Casey Seals Splash was held and we have a Two Million Metres recipient - Dee Greenwood (VSP). We also have sad news: that Boroughcoutas Queenscliff Blue Water Challenge will not be held next year (we will be doing an article celebrating this wonderful event in the next E-news) and the passing of one of North Lodge and MSV's founding members Sydney Krasey - a tribute to (Sid) is in this email.
Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

And lastly a note from Pauline Samson (National Recorder) - she is asking for anyone who has any old results, programs, newsletters etc that would be happy to contribute to her work on updating the records portal to contact her. All would be scanned and can be returned to you, if you would like to keep them. If you don’t want to part with these documents, you could scan them and email. Pauline's postal address is P O Box 206, Lindisfarne, 7015 or you can email her:

Winter is just beginning but it is already cold enough to want something to look forward to and that something can be “Swim into Spring 2017”. Make the most out of the cold months to decide and plan what you and your club can do when it is time to Swim into Spring and look no further as MSA has developed a comprehensive “Swim into Spring Campaign Toolkit” to help you. The Toolkit contains ideas of things to do, specially written text to use in promoting/advertising your activity and a link to Dropbox where the artwork for the 2017 campaign is stored. Your club will by now have the “Swim into Spring Campaign Toolkit”.  Need help with planning and or promoting your activity then contact MSA Project Manager

Do you want to Coach? Does your Club have members who have the attributes to be a Coach. MSV are holding their Club Coach Course on Sunday July 31. You can support your members to become coaches by contributing to the cost of the course. For more info click HERE.

As most of you may have noticed, MSV introduced four divisions into the relay carnival in 2016. For a few years, the Management Committee had puzzled over how to make the relay carnival more fun and competitive for the smaller clubs and a simple formula of divisions based on the number of club members was adopted. We hope that it is achieving its aim – and to test that I thought it would be interesting to see how last year’s winners had welcomed the innovation and, hopefully, will inspire other clubs to compete against their peers. It is with great sadness that we say farewell to our North Lodge Life Member Sid Krasey. Sid passed away on the 7th June aged 96. He was one of the foundation members of Masters Swimming Victoria swimming in the first Victorian meet on 14th November 1976 and subsequently many others over the years. His favourite stroke was Breaststroke especially the 50m. He had a "hot shower" as his warm up!! He also swam double arm Backstroke with a Breaststroke kick fast enough to break many records.

We remember SId as a kind, warm hearted and witty man with lots of jokes to tell. We had many North Lodge trips to Nationals, Alice Springs and Mildura to remember him by. His thunderous, spouting water claps during warm ups were another memory as the water hit you in the face from several lanes over.

He continued to swim with the RSL into his 90's. We will miss the jokes, the cheeky comments, his enjoyment of life and his friendships but most of all we will miss him. Rest in peace Sid.

Casey Seals Splash (review)
By all accounts it was a fantastic night. It ran like clockwork thanks to another stirling effort by Paul Watmough (MSV Recording Director) and the team of officials and volunteers who helped run the meet. They hurtled through the program much faster than expected - so much so that they were able to provide a 5-minute break to allow some swimmers time to recover before the 100m events (especially appreciated by swimmers who do the 50m free and then straight into the 100m fly). You can check out the results HERE
