Welcome to the December MSA eNewsletter

What a wonderful year we have had so far in the Masters Swimming world and whilst we are sad to say goodbye to such an amazing swimming year we are excited for 2017. As well as all the Branch and Club meets we had a successful 2016 Swim Series which included The Nationals and PPMG2016, many Club, Branch, National and World records broken, Millions of Metres swum and another successful Endurance 1000 program participated in.
This edition of the eNewsletter is a bumper edition - please enjoy the read.

MSA 12 month 2017 Memberships now open!!!
Have you joined or re-newed your membership for 2017...now is the time to join a Masters Swimming Club. Meet new friends, get fit, have fun and experience the enjoyment of swimming in a supportive environment and you can purchase one of these new MSA swimming caps while you are at it. Clubs: please make sure you have opened your subscription portal so that your members can join and also make sure you regularly check to see if you have any members waiting to be activated. We don't want anyone missing out on a swim!!

MSA Seeking new President and Finance Director in the New Year
Craig Smith and Gerry Tucker are both retiring from their NBM positions following the AGM in April 2017 and MSA is now calling for volunteers to replace them in these very important leadership positions of President and Finance Director.

Million Metres
The next closing date 1 February 2017
What a great year the Million Metres have had with 42 swimmers achieving one of the distances . Successful recipients for November 2016 were One Million Metres:Christopher Fry, Katrina Burgess, Robin Griffiths, Jenna Freeman, Carol-Ann Infante, Shiralee Bielenberg, Donna French and William Eversham. Two Million Metres: Donna French. Three Million Metres: David Davies and Donna French. Seven Million Metres: Graham Senders and Kate Lewis. MSA Swim Series
  • 2016 Swim Series wrap
    Since the October e-Newsletter the last 3 meets of the 2016 Swim Series were held. What a fantastc series it was this year - MSNT SC Championships, LiveLighter 2016 All Club Challenge and the Pan Pacific Games. Click HERE to read about the Winners from each age group.
  • 2017 Swim Series Eight meets make up the MSA 2017 National Swim Series – the highlight being the 2017 NATIONALCHAMPIONSHIPS, to be held on the Gold Coast, and one nominated meet from each of the Masters Swimming Branches. The more Meets you enter, the better the multiplier for your points. MSA 2016 Coach of the Year 
The MSA Coach of the Year Award provides the opportunity to recognise the valuable contributions that coaches make to Masters Swimming in Australia. You can nominate someone via your Branch COY Award - contact your Branch for closing date.
MSA 2016 Official of the Year
The MSA Official of the Year Award provides the opportunity to recognise the valuable contribution that Technical Officials make to Masters Swimming in Australia. If you know a Technical Official who meets the criteria you should consider nominating them for this award via your Branch Awards - contact your Branch for closing date.

2017 FINA Masters World Championships
10 - 20 August 2017 
FINA, swimming’s governing body, has posted the competition schedule for the 2017 Masters World Championships, which will be held in Budapest, Hungary next summer. The event, running from August 7-20, will feature all five aquatic sports:
  • Swimming – August 14-20
  • Open Water – August 10-12
  • Diving – August 7-13
  • Water Polo – August 7-13
  • Synchro – August 7-13

Congratulations to MSNT for holding a successful and well attended SC Championships in Alice Springs. We enjoyed all the photos from various clubs FB pages. MSNT clubs have been busy holding end of year celebrations and preparing for 2017 - check out their updated Pool training sessions - click

MSNSW has also been incredibly this year and are preparing for an even busier one in 2017 - with another 'pop-up' event at Hornsby Pool on 14 January which is a great way to start of Endurance 1000 for 2017. Check ou their Meet Calendar

MSWA is pleased to announce that the City of Mandurah has been selected as the host venue of the 2018 Masters Swimming National Championships. Read more about it HERE. And they have been busy over west. A very successful State Open Water was held recently in conjunction with the Fremantle Ports Swim Thru event.  The weather was very kind and this was reflected in the large number of participants. Congratulations to Perth City who won the Champion Club Award and Westcoast Masters who won the Club Performance Award. Read more HERE

Congratulations to MSQ for a very successful PPMG 2016. They had a wonderful photographer Gary Brinkman, who compiled a You Tube from the PPMG 2016, which is on the MSQ
website and definatley worth a look. They are now busy looking forward to Nationals in 8 - 11 March and Great Barrier Reef Masters Games 25 - 28 May 2016. Check out the results from PPMG 2016 HERE

The last few months have been very busy at MSV. We saw off the last 2 ‘Swim into Spring’ events, a celebration of 40 years of Masters Swimming in Victoria, some well supported MSV and Club meets and another Coaching Course. Read more from MSV HERE

MSNSW Volunteer - Sue Wiles
Sue is President of Blue Mountains Phoenix Adult Swim Club AND is a trusty Board member of Masters Swimming NSW AND an Official at many, many MSNSW swim meets usually at the far end of the pool in the capacity of Inspector of Turns. We also hear that she also volunteers at a local RSPCA gardening group who are currently struggling with Agapanthas as they’re a noxious weed in the Blue Mountains. MSSA Volunteer Profile – Melissa Beames
Let us show our appreciation for the efforts of MSSA Swim Meet Director, Melissa Beames. Melissa took on the role in May 2015 after returning to Adelaide from Sydney due to illness and was inspired by her parents involvement. Melissa organises the Pool Swims and makes sure that they are run to a high standard.  Read all about her HERE

Jen’s Hawaii Ironman World Championships Race Report

Margaret Cunningham inducted into the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame
Margaret was one of 6 swimmers to be inducted into the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame in the USA recently. Since 1986, Margaret Cunningham, a very popular member of North Mackay Sinkers, has been in the FINA Top Ten 23 times. She has set 14 long course and 20 short course FINA Masters World Records, mostly in the freestyle and individual medley. She has supported and competed in 4 FINA World Championships since 1990 winning 10 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals. To read all about her incredible swimming journey click

Gladstone Gropers - Pearl Anniversary 1986 - 2016
Congratulations to the Gladstone Gropers from MSQ recently celebrated 30 years - we at MSA received a wonderful book detailing their history. The club was formed with the assistance of the Rocky Crocs club with sessions in the South Gladstone School pool of a Sunday during the summer months with a membership of 24. After outgrowing the South School pool the club shifted and grew in size for the next 20 years at the John Dahl Pool the home of Western Suburbs Swimming Club, membership rising to over 100 at the maximum.
