Message from Thomas Jefferson Health District (March 19, 2020, 5:59 pm)

Coronavirus and your Congregation

Good afternoon, Faith Community Leaders.

Since my last email, there have been many changes in our recommendations for your congregations. As of this morning, there were four positive COVID-19 cases in the Charlottesville area

The Thomas Jefferson Health District (TJHD) is continuing to monitor and investigate any local cases. We are working tirelessly to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 in our community, but we need your help!  During challenging times such as these, our faith based leaders are critical to the lives of so many that are scared, searching for answers, and seeking the comfort of normalcy.

At this point, TJHD recommends that individuals stay home as much as possible, especially our most  vulnerable populations. Earlier this week, Governor Northam declared that everyone should avoid social gatherings of more than 10 people, which includes limiting restaurants, gyms, and theatres to only 10 patrons. While it is a difficult decision to make, we are asking that you cancel services or limit them to less than 10 people for the foreseeable future, with the following guidance:
  • Events/services of under 10 people should only be continued if they can be carried out with adherence to guidelines for protecting vulnerable populations, hand hygiene, and social distancing (which has been defined by CDC as maintaining a distance of 6 feet away from others).
  • Phone calls, small gatherings with social distancing of six feet, virtual services, and email messaging are all ways to continue to stay connected.
  • Review the CDC's website for the latest Interim Guidance for Community and Faith Leaders
TJHD has a hotline for community questions and concerns - 434-972-6261 - please share this with your members. You can also visit the VDH COVID-19 Website for the latest information (www.vdh.virginia.gov/coronavirus)

We appreciate your leadership during this challenging time. Thank you!

Social Justice in a Time of Social Distancing

By Kenneth Bailey and Lori Lobenstein, Design Studio for Social Intervention

The advised precautions for dealing with the coronavirus ask us to focus on ourselves. Wash your hands. Cover your mouth. Don’t host or attend large gatherings. The precautions make us turn inward to focus on the virus’s impact on our individual health and the interruption of our daily lives. As much as we have to take these precautions, we must also understand that they are doing something to us. They are arranging us in ways that produce effects.
