Difficult Conversations: Religion and Race - with Anthea Butler

Sunday, August 8, 5:00 to 6:30 pm, Register for Zoom link.

The Charlottesville Clergy Collective invites you to join us in “Difficult Conversations: Religion and Race,” an online panel discussion addressing the history of white religious institutions as contributors to racial oppression and leading us towards conversation about repair.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Anthea Butler, University of Pennsylvania Associate Professor of Religious Studies & Africana Studies, to speak about her new book, White Evangelical Racism: The Politics of Morality in America. Dr. Butler will then join in a panel discussion moderated by Devin Coles, CCC member and pastor of Union Baptist Church, together with Gayle Jessup White, Public Relations & Community Engagement Officer at Monticello / Thomas Jefferson Foundation, and Tricia Johnson, Director of the Fluvanna County Historical Society.

This event builds on the work we did in the 2019 “Conversations on Reconciliation” series (held on Jan 21, May 23, and Oct. 29). Please join us to continue this important work, which is planned to be the first in a series of conversations that move us from reflection to action in identifying and repairing racial harm in our communities and our faith traditions. The program will be presented via Zoom to facilitate questions from the capacity-limited audience (of 100), so RSVP early using the registration link below, with overflow registrants able to view the program on the CCC Facebook page

You must register in advance for this meeting (35 spots left!). After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Download this flyer for more information and to publicize in your congregation.

The event is offered for free, though donations are appreciated to help with expenses and support CCC’s mission.
