Sand Motor succesful driver of innovative coastal management

Five years after the Sand Motor emerged from the waves, the results of the first major evaluation have been published. The conclusions are positive. Five years ago the scheme started with three goals: increase coastal safety, create extra space for leisure and nature and contribute to knowledge development about coastal management. Results show that these goals are achieved, sometimes even better than expected. Read more.

Silt from Harlingen harbour to protect Frisian coast

As of September the Municipality of Harlingen, It Fryske Gea and EcoShape will together start a special experiment; 300,000 cubic meters of silt from the harbor of Harlingen is used to stimulate the growth of salt marshes at Koehoal, on the Friesian coast. Read more in dutch.

Sustainable protection of mangrove coast

The Building with Nature approach is applied in Indonesia to restore eroding mangrove-mud coasts. This approach combines ecosystem-based engineering and sustainable land use solutions to create a productive and stable coastline for local communities. Read more in Terra et Aqua.

 

Living Shorelines will get fast track to combat sea level rise

Wetlands, sand dunes and mangroves could protect shorelines more inexpensively than walls and bulkheads. Read more.
