DAMA UK News - July 2020
DAMA NORTHERN MEET UP 26 JUNE 2020
This latest regional event was again insightful and successful. A variety of people attended this virtual session, including members from The Scottish Qualifications Authority, Natural Resources Wales, Slalom and several people from the financial services sector. We continued to share our hot topics and provided some practical help to support each other. Hot topics included ideas on how to inject excitement into data governance across an organisation, data integration / Power BI, data processes and data ownership models. We also agreed to share some best practices in data retention and data quality processes within this group.

REGIONAL COMMUNITIES OF INTEREST – NORTHERN IRELAND
Many of you will be aware that over the last three years we have been putting an increased emphasis on supporting regional communities of interest, in order to bring DAMA UK out to all parts of the UK. This has led to the creation of active community groups in the North of England, Scotland and elsewhere plus a number of regional events held in Bristol, Southampton, Cirencester, Cardiff, Stratford on Avon, Nottingham and so on.
We are very aware, however, that up to now this strategy has not been rolled out to one part of the UK, namely Northern Ireland. We would be very keen to support the creation of a regional community here, but need someone based in the six counties to help us do this. If you are based in Northern Ireland and feel you could work with us to help start to create a data management community of interest, please contact email@example.com

DAMA UK and BCS DMSG Joint Event
Our summer event hosted jointly with the BCS/DMSG is always one of the highlights of our calendar. It is a chance for our members to meet each other and members of the BCS/DMSG and to benefit from a rich mix of speakers. Planning was already well underway for this year’s event on the theme of Delivering Value Through Data when the COVID-19 restrictions were announced. With a varied cast of speakers lined up we were determined not to cancel the event and so we set about re-planning the event as a series of webinars. The end result was our first ever joint virtual conference with our friends at the BCS/DMSG, held over a week from 15th-19th June.
Webinars were hosted at a rate of 2 a day, one in the morning and one in the late afternoon, finishing with a panel discussion on Friday afternoon. The webinars were well attended, sometimes with over 100 attendees for a single webinar, and there were plenty of questions at the end of each, which indicates a high level of interest.
Sectors represented included finance, government, health care, transport, oil & gas and construction. All webinars were recorded and are available on YouTube, so if you were unable to attend the event, but would like to follow one or more of the sessions, then please take a look; everything is available on catch up.
The only question that now remains, is whether we should return to a physical event next year, or stay with the virtual format. There are pros and cons for each.

DAMA UK WEBSITE REFRESH – REQUEST FOR HELP
As reported in last month’s mailshot, we are continuing to work on refreshing our DAMA UK website. We have developed a new site plan, and are busy creating both new and updated content.
Over the next few weeks we are planning to revamp the entire look and feel of the site. To help us do this we are potentially looking to engage a graphical designer. Experience of Wild Apricot, which our site sits on, would be an advantage, though not essential. We are prepared to pay a fee for the work, so if you think you may be able to help, or can suggest anyone whom you know and would recommend, please get in touch with Nigel Turner at firstname.lastname@example.org
