Dear Friends,

Every relationship is different, but what is most common within all abusive relationships is the varying tactics used by abusers to gain and maintain power and control over the victim. As a donor to Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence, you can ensure that our services and staff are there when someone seeks help. During this season of gratitude please consider making a gift allowing other victims of abuse to be thankful that someone is there to help. Patricia used to read news stories about women and families that had been destroyed by senseless acts of violence, and she would get a sick feeling, fearing her family could be next.

“Having grown up with lots of physical violence, I didn’t take insults and put-downs seriously. He became controlling, wanting to direct every detail of our lives, and criticized me and our two girls constantly. One night, he choked me, saying he’d kill me and the girls if I ever left him.”

He continued to threaten and abuse her regularly as a reminder of what would happen if she stepped out of line or left. Patricia felt hopeless, ashamed, and unsure as to who to turn to, trust, and help her and her children find safety. Then she learned of Next Door Solutions. That first day she was able to meet with an advocate who asked and listened as Patricia told her story.

“Putting it into words was tremendously helpful to clarify in my own mind that we were in great danger and couldn’t continue that way. The advocate helped me make a safe escape plan — because you can’t just get out — you need to be able to do it without being hurt, or worse, during and after leaving.”

During her initial visit, she was assisted with filing a restraining order, resulting in her abuser moving out and having to stay away from her and her children. She began attending one of the Support Groups where she met other women also learning to survive domestic abuse. And she was astounded at the variety — age, race, ethnicity, cultures, economics, and professions — women from all walks of life. Patricia also wanted to help others in the community and joined NDS’ Speakers Bureau, representing Next Door Solutions at community events and making presentations to local organizations. Please make your gift today by clicking on the link below or visiting
