Feature Story: Cross Campus Collaboration 

Professor of Drama and Associate Dean of the Claire Trevor School of Arts, Vincent Olivieri and Computer Science Lecturer in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, Richert Wang have joined together to create a course that will help their students integrate sound design into the videogame-making process.

David Cuccia is the CEO and CTO of Modulated Imaging, a start-up based in Irvine, CA that uses spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI), an alternate method of viewing tissue, to make medical diagnoses.

Flying High at UCI: Announcing UCI Media Drone Services

Working with UCI Risk Management, John Wayne Airport and the University of California Office of the President, UCI Media now has clearance as the only UCI approved vendor able to use a drone on campus for aerial filming and photography.

The Blum Center for Poverty Alleviation hosted a launch party to help UCI undergrads, faculty, and staff learn about their new course PP&D 115: Global Poverty and Inequality in the 21st Century.

Pedagogical Fellow Showcase: Greg Suryn

Greg Suryn is a Ph.D. candidate in the Chemistry Department. He served as a Pedagogical Fellow (PF) during the 2015–2016 school year, as well as returning as a Senior PF to help with the TA Professional Development Program (TAPDP) in 2016. His chemistry research is in the area of natural product synthesis and organic chemistry methods development. He is also interested in chemistry education and outreach, and has been involved with the UCI Chemistry Outreach team to try and inspire the next generation of scientists. Greg answers our PF Showcase questions here

National Active Learning Day 

In honor of the recent National Active Learning Day, the UCI Division of Teaching and Learning (DTL) encouraged a collection of exercises appropriate for all disciplines and put together some articles and videos for you to explore. If you missed them, you can explore them here

Free Academic Listening and Note-Taking Courses 

The vital academic skills of speaking and listening can be a challenge for international students coming to UCI. Skills such as being able to decipher main ideas, taking effective notes, presenting information clearly, and listening actively to take part in a group discussion are critical for academic success. Useful to native and non-native English speakers alike, the Division of Continuing Education has developed the following MOOC courses, “Academic Listening and Note-Taking,” “Presentations: Speaking so that People Listen,” and “Academic Discussions in English.”

Our November Social Media "Lunch" will be on Tuesday, November 29th from 1:30pm-3:30pm at Aldrich Hall Room 107. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP here

Please encourage your students to participate in UCI's Black Lives Matter Writing Contest, which is ending soon! Any UCI undergraduate student can share a conversation about black connections and how to overcome internal and external violence. For details, deadlines, and submission guidelines please visit here. 

Big Ideas is an early-stage innovation contest that provides funding, support and recognition to interdisciplinary teams of students with creative solutions to pressing social challenges. The program is seeking high-quality judges and mentors across 9 categories to provide 6-8 hours of feedback, support, and advising to students.

The 2017 Beall New Venture Competition offers all UC Irvine students, staff, and researchers the chance to form a team, create a concept and pitch, and potentially fund their business idea within six months.

The Final Presentations and Awards Ceremony for the competition will be held on May 12.
