Albanian Prime Minister Calls on PM Lee

Prime Minister of the Republic of Albania, Edi Rama, called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during his visit from 17 to 19 January 2017 for the Singapore-Albania Trade & Investment Forum.  Both leaders reaffirmed the warm and friendly ties between Singapore and Albania, and discussed ways to broaden bilateral cooperation. 

Prime Minister Rama delivered the keynote address at the Forum. It was an event to showcase investment opportunities in Albania and explore collaborative opportunities between Singaporean and Albanian businesses.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister-In-Charge of the Smart Nation Initiative, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, and Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and Ministry of Trade and Industry Ms Sim Ann, are currently participating in the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, from 17 to 20 January 2017.

Minister Balakrishnan participated in sessions on Singapore's Smart Nation Initiative, including the impact of new technologies on future jobs; enhanced education and training; autonomous mobility to improve public transport; and more responsive public services. Minister Balakrishnan also attended sessions involving government and business leaders from ASEAN to share the lessons learnt from the ASEAN experience and the opportunities, challenges and priorities of ASEAN in the new global context. 

SMS Sim Ann participated in sessions related to sustainable energy innovation and globalisation. SMS Sim also represented Singapore at the Informal World Trade Organisation (WTO) Ministerial Gathering, hosted by Swiss Federal Councillor Johann Schneider-Ammann, on the side-lines of the WEF Meeting. This meeting brought together more than 30 Trade and Foreign Ministers of selected WTO Members to discuss potential deliverables for the upcoming 11th WTO Ministerial Conference in December, as well as the future of trade in light of the current global economic situation.

Heads of missions and embassy staff from Peru, Sri Lanka, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, France and Egypt had a field day trying their hand at darts on 14 January 2016 at the Tanglin Club.The event was hosted by Cheong Min Chee, a member of the Rotary Club of Jurong Town and Darts Convenor of the Tanglin Club.

There was even a mini-competition which saw Peru and Sri Lanka contesting for the winner's trophy. It was eventually won by His Excellency Nimal Weeraratne, High Commissioner of the Sri Lankan High Commission in Singapore. He defeated his counterpart, Peruvian ambassador, His Excellency Manuel Talavera Espinar, in an entertaining and nail-biting game.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Pavlo Klimkin, called on Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, during his official visit on 16 January 2017 to Singapore. They reaffirmed the friendly ties between Singapore and Ukraine on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, and discussed ways to strengthen and broaden bilateral cooperation.

After their meeting, Minister Balakrishnan and Minister Klimkin witnessed the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs). The MOU between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (SCE) will explore opportunities for the sharing of Singapore’s experiences with Ukraine in various areas including economic development, sea and air port management, and special economic zones.  The MOU between the Ministry of Science and Education of Ukraine (MESU) and Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) will explore collaborations in mutual areas of interest in science and technology. 

Minister Klimkin also paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who welcomed the strengthening bilateral ties. In addition, Minister Klimkin called on Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam.
