WHATS HAPPENING LOCALLY?
The Southampton Local Safeguarding Boards are hosting an Annual Conference on Thursday 1st December 2016 the focus of this is:
This is for all that work with adults, families, children and young people in Southampton. 
Come and hear from local and national experts and take part in practical workshops on the topics of neglect (children) and self neglect (adults).
Morning session (9am-12.30pm) – Neglect of Children and Young People
Afternoon session (1.30 – 5pm) – Self Neglect in Adults

Supervision has been a common  learning theme throughout the recent reviews and audit work undertaken by both the LSCB and the LSAB.

Strategically, there are policies in place and processes that should be followed. As Safeguarding Boards, we are keen to see whether those on the ground feel that these are being adhered to and whether supervision is as robust as it should be.

This has been a busy year for the LSAB with much progress being made. These reports aim to elaborate on findings and trends from the last financial year and detail plans to work together to continue improving the safety and wellbeing of adults at risk in Southampton.

Southampton City Council wants the children, young people and families of Southampton to have the opportunity to express their views, feel heard and be actively involved in decisions that affect them.  The LSCB is linked in to this work and we want to help the Council gain views about; schools, parks, transport, housing and social care to name but a few. Leaflet for Parents & Carers: Bruising Protocol
A bruising Protocol leaflet has been developed across the 4LSCB areas of Southampton, Portsmouth, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to reassure and explain the protocol for assessing bruises in           non-mobile babies to parents and carers.  See the leaflet here
Changes to the 'Front Door' for Children and Families Services
From week beginning 17th October 2016 there are some planned changes to the way referrals to Children’s Social Care are handled with the aim to promote improved responsiveness and decision-making for children through collaborative professional conversations agreeing who is best placed to meet the needs of a child, next steps, and a ‘never do nothing’ approach. 

The Advice and Duty Service will provide a single point of access aligned to the MASH, and will continue to ensure that whatever the level of concern an appropriate response can be agreed.  
Current MASH arrangements will remain the same as will the professionals’ number 023 8083 2300 to discuss concerns about a child.

Maria Carrick is the Hampshire Constabulary School and Youth Engagement Co-ordinator from the Police. Although some organisations and services will close over the festive break - many organisations won't. If you need volunteers to help over the Christmas period now is the time to let Imogen Higgs at SVS know! SVS get an influx of volunteers who are looking to give time over Christmas - and if you're an organisation looking for new volunteers this is a great opportunity to engage with keen people. The Christmas Volunteering form is available on the SVS website.
 
Southampton Rape Crisis has changed its name to Yellow Door
The service offers the same support to individuals aged 11 + who have suffered any unwanted sexual experience and are living in Southampton, Western Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, as well as some support services for those who have experienced domestic abuse. Contact details are:

Local "Prevent" News
Southampton City Council Prevent website is now live - this is linked to the Safe City Partnership web pages. The partnership aims for this to be a valuable tool for partners, voluntary groups and residents of Southampton. Links to local and national e-learning are availaible on the page.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight PREVENT Partnership Board website has also gone live and can be accessed by using the following link:

http://www.hampshireiowpreventboard.org.uk. This provides a wealth of useful information on national and local guidance, training, resources and links to useful organisations. 

Please promote the website in your organisation and amongst your networks and also if possible place a link to it on your websites and/or intranet sites.

25th November is White Ribbon Day!

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, also known as White Ribbon Day is happening on 25th November. From this date, until the 10th December, there are 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. This period is a time to spur action to end violence against women and girls around the world. Link to White Ribbon Newsletter

Come and pick up your white ribbon from the foyer of the Civic Centre in Southampton and have a look at the White Ribbon Day display.

Half Day Workshops

Working Together to Safeguard Children Level 3 Multi Agency Training
This training is for professionals who have particular responsibility for undertaking child protection enquiries and work with complex cases including being part of a Core Group. For more information, please click here

Safeguarding Adults Learning and Development
Adult Safeguarding training is available for staff members of Southampton City Council, and the Voluntary and Private Sector. To find out more about this training, please email learning.development@southampton.gov.uk

Safeguarding Children Learning and Development
The course is multi agency and will help you to carry out your crucial role ensuring agencies work together to protect children from harm. For more information on these and on how to book, please click here.

Adult and Children Safeguarding and E-Learning
Southampton City Council has now developed Level 1 Safeguarding Adults and Children e-learning available to Southampton City Council Staff, Schools and approved Voluntary and Independent Providers in the Care sector.  To find out more about this training please email learning.development@southampton.gov.uk

National News and Information
 The AILC have published their fifth Review of Ofsted Inspection Reports of LSCBs. This report includes a review of the last few months reports by Ofsted, a comparison of judgements with previous cohorts, and a list of comments made about LSCB Chairs. This time, they also present Ofsted’s JTAI commentaries regarding LSCBs, as well as results of AILC’s interviews with Chairs who have experienced a JTAI recently. 
The NSPCC and O2 have partnered to help parents keep their kids safe online. To see some of the things parents can do and how they can help visit NSPCC Share Aware Campaign. 

Sexting describes the use of technology to generate images or videos made by children under the age of 18 of other children; images that are of a sexual nature and are indecent.  For advice on How to talk to children about the risks of sexting - and what you can do to protect them, what the law says, why children sext visit the NSPCC website

The UK Safer Internet Centre is a partnership of three leading organisations with one mission to promote the safe and responsible use of technology for young people.  In October they launched their brand new website.  Safer Internet day 2017 will take place on 7th February 2017 with the theme:  Be the change:Unite for a better Internet!

The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) improves the lives of people who use care services by sharing knowledge about what works.  Their October bulletin covers the topic of Dementia and Care Act Training and specifically;
  • Helping people with Dementia to stay living at home
  • A dementia resource that raises awareness of how you can support LGBT & BME people living with dementia

Children Missing Education Guidance Update
On the 5th September 2016, the Department for Education (DfE) issued the updated statutory guidance 'Children Missing Education'. Children missing education are children of compulsory school age who are not registered pupils at a school and are not receiving suitable education otherwise than at a school.

Scams affect the lives of millions of people across the UK. People who are scammed often experience loneliness, shame and social isolation.
Friends Against Scams is a National Trading Standards (NTS) Scams Team initiative, which aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams by empowering communities to "Take a Stand Against Scams'.

 
Button Batteries                                                                       
                             
The BBC recently highlighted the dangers of button batteries.  They issued a stark warning about batteries , particularly a lithium coin battery, if this gets stuck in a child’s throat or gullet, the battery’s energy makes the body create caustic soda (the chemical used to unblock drains).
