Newsletter # 48 ~ October 2022
Kangaroos grazing, WA.

Dear <<First Name>>,

After a long and dry summer, we are experiencing a rainy September here in Europe, and the leaves on the trees are starting to change colour to welcome in the autumn.

For Anukampa Bhikkhuni Project this autumn is especially exciting for a number of reasons, not least because it is just a month until we will be welcoming back our teacher, Venerable Candā. She will give her first Dhamma talk after her solitary retreat on the 30th October (at 9am UK time). It will be exciting to see her again and to hear her reflections on her time in the Australian bush.

As well as Venerable Candā’s return, there are many very exciting events coming up and on the horizon, from Ajahn Brahm’s UK tour this November, to a visit by Ajahn Brahmali in 2023.

Join Our Inspiring Autumn Programme

Until Venerable Candā returns we are still delighted to be welcoming guest Bhikkhunis to teach for the Anukampa community. Anukampa Buddhist Vihara

As you know, when Venerable Candā returns to the UK in November she will finally have a permanent address at Anukampa Buddhist Vihara in Oxford.

Over the past months, Kelly and Sue have been very busy preparing the new house – cleaning, connecting the essential services (including Internet), and constructing the flatpack furniture that has been so generously donated by so many people.

For the remaining things that are still needed, we have created the following Amazon wishlist which is automatically updated. If you would like to make an offering to the vihāra, you can see what is still needed there. Thank you very much for your continued support!

When Venerable first returns to the UK in November she looks forward to "monasticising" the property! Towards the middle of January, once a few supporters have quietly helped her settle, Venerable Candā hopes to be ready to receive visitors and overnight guests at the vihāra. If you are interested in visiting or staying for several days, from January onwards, please contact us at
Ven Canda & Ajahn Brahm

Opportunity to Feed the Sangha

From December, Venerable will again be accepting kind offerings of food dāna – whether in the form of a vegetable box, a shopping delivery, or a supermarket voucher. Then lay guests will be able to cook for her.

From around mid-January 2023, there will also be the opportunity to offer meals in person. The visiting time for lunch dāna will be between 10:30am and 1pm, with the meal offering at 11.15am. To make things easier for those who work, Venerable is available to receive food offerings between 5:30pm and 7pm, which can be reheated and offered by a lay guest the next day.

If you are interested in offering food dāna to Venerable Candā and her guests, please contact us at and we will help organise a suitable date and time for you to make your offering.

Anukampa Tour With Ajahn Brahm ~ November 2022

It is exciting that the UK tour with Venerable Candā and Ajahn Brahm is less than two months away!

There are still spaces available for the talks being offered in London, Oxford, Birmingham, Stroud, and Bristol.

More information about this tour, including how to book tickets for the talks, can be found on the Anukampa website or via the links below.

Video Volunteer Needed!
We still have opportunities for you to help at all the above talks (except the London Buddhist Society) If you would like to join our team, please get in contact with us at

We are particularly in need of a video volunteer (with equipment!) so we can share the Dhamma on the Anukampa YouTube Channel.

New Year Retreat with Venerable Candā

This year, Venerable Candā will again teach a three-day non-residential retreat (both in person and online), organised by Sheffield Insight Meditation. The retreat will run from Thursday the 29th December to Saturday the 31st December (9:30am – 5pm each day). The title of the retreat will be “Time to Love the Breath”.

Do you struggle to keep your mind on the breath and wonder if you should try a different technique?

This retreat will explore the powerful practices of loving kindness (metta) and mindfulness of breathing (anapanasati). Together we will discover how they can work in harmony and synergy to help brighten and calm the mind, leading to insights that relieve suffering.

We will start by establishing an attitude of metta as a way of opening our heart to the present moment, in a non-judgemental way. This will form the basis of practice that can be returned to throughout the retreat.

We will also cultivate metta meditation as a joyful means to develop stillness (samadhi) and overcome restlessness and discontent; hindrances that can make it difficult to stay with a subtler meditation object like the breath. As feelings of contentment and ease develop through metta practice, mindfulness increases and the breath becomes easier and more enjoyable to watch. The stages of breath meditation may then start to unfold naturally. With guidance, we will learn to intuitively sense how loving kindness and breath meditation can be alternated or even combined, to deepen our meditation - through wisdom rather than force.

If you are interested in attending the retreat, please contact Sheffield Insight directly.

Ajahn Brahmali in the UK in 2023
