Welcome to August Partner Pulse

Thank you so much for your participation in the TYSA coalition. Whether you are a business or nonprofit partner, workgroup member or Steering Committee member, your commitment and hard work helps us to accomplish our goals. Below you will read about TYSA workgroups, decisions of the TYSA Steering Committee, and important partner updates and upcoming events.

Monthly Data Download

As we begin to collect data for the Young Adult Survey (YAS) again in Summer & Fall 2018, we are also looking back at where we were in 2015. Over the past few years, the TYSA coalition has worked to address young adult substance use behaviors through dedicated strategies such as hosting prevention forums to engage college students and administrators in policy planning around underage alcohol use and community messaging around opioid risks. The results of our current data collection (2018 YAS) will show us where those efforts have taken us so far, and where we can continue to improve.
ACTION NEEDED:
TYSA needs young adults to complete the Young Adult Survey. Please share with 18-25 year olds who live/work/go to school in SI. We also need volunteers to share flyers in their neighborhood & help distribute the survey at events.

TYSA Knock Out Addiction
SI Yankee Game

Thank you so much to everyone who helped with the Knock Out Addiction game! This includes our planning committee, volunteers, organizations who tabled, everyone who helped get the word out, and partners who attended in support.  It was a nice celebration of those in recovery and a reminder that people are not alone in their struggles, but have an entire community behind them. It was also a fun night and a time to celebrate the great work all of you are doing with TYSA to make a difference on Staten Island.

Workgroup Updates

Social Norms

- Social Norms Workgroup discussed improvements for next year’s Prom Sticker Shock and ideas for service-learning projects Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) students could do with TYSA. The group brainstormed ideas for the Steering Committee recommendation about working on binge drinking among college students. They also suggested doing a fall/Halloween poster campaign related to substance use in high schools.
- Through UAU, TYSA was able to work with 2 SYEP service-learning classes for 4 visits, which involved Drug Awareness and Bystander Intervention workshops, discussions, activities, and hands-on projects based on student interest. (see below images for some examples)

Opioid

- The Opioid Workgroup debriefed on the mayor's recent visit including the ribbon cutting at the H&H Vanderbilt clinic, Mental Health Service Corps, and South Shore SafeTYNet.
- Members also reviewed the BHI OB-GYN toolkit, pharmacy inserts, and Just Ask toolkit.
- The Pharmacy Symposium planning committee held a call to define the audience for the event, solidify the agenda, select speakers, and work to connect with additional pharmacists for feedback.

School-Based

- The School-Based Workgroup strategized the most effective way to reach parents at the beginning of the school year and engage them in substance use prevention efforts. They also edited the updated Parents You Matter tip sheet together and provided suggestions for YAS data collection.
- Congrats Stephanie Caloir and Bob Mikos, newly voted SBWG co-chairs!

Policy & Advocacy

- Policy & Advocacy held a planning call to work through logistics of scheduling a meeting with the NYS Department of the Budget. There will be another planning call in August to review the TYSA 1-pager of asks across the continuum and to finalize details for the meeting.

Candace Crupi's Annual Candlelight Vigil for loved ones lost to addiction is on 8/24. Please see below for details.
