In nature, a harrier is a bird of prey that hunts by flying low over open ground, feeding on small mammals, reptiles, or birds. To military historians, a Harrier was one of a family of revolutionary jet-powered attack aircraft capable of vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) operations. To knife enthusiasts, however, the Harrier is an even more rare and elusive species. It was the very first member of Spyderco’s byrd® line of value-priced folding knives.

Introduced in 2004, the byrd Harrier was designed as an everyday-carry folding knife that boasted all the defining features of a Spyderco CLIPIT® in a much more affordable format. It featured an upswept blade ground from AUS-6 stainless steel, Micarta scales, bolsters, and a right-side, tip-down pocket clip. Spyderco’s first attempt to have a knife manufactured in China, the Harrier unfortunately suffered from inconsistent quality and many did not meet our demanding standards. While some did pass our quality control inspection and were released into the market, the vast majority of them were actually destroyed. The few still out there in private collections are now coveted collector’s items.

Although we were understandably disappointed with our first effort to create a byrd knife, we persevered. Fifteen years later, the byrd line now thrives alongside its Spyderco brethren and continues to earn loyal followers worldwide. To celebrate that success and our own tenacity, we thought the time was right to resurrect the Harrier concept with an all-new, much more worthy knife. Meet the Harrier 2.
While the Harrier 2 shares the name of its predecessor, in reality it has a very different identity and style of construction. Designed as a practical, functional, and budget-friendly cutting tool, its medium size makes it ideal for convenient everyday carry. In fact, like the recently released Spyderco Endela™, the Harrier 2's “in-between” size effectively splits the difference between the byrd line’s best-selling Cara Cara™ 2 and the Meadowlark™ 2.

The business end of the knife features a satin-finished 8Cr13MoV stainless steel blade that is full-flat ground for optimal edge geometry. Available in both plain and partially serrated formats, it has a textured thumb ramp and index-finger choil to support a forward, “choked up” grip and proudly sports byrd’s signature “comet-shaped” hole for easy, ambidextrous, one-handed opening.

The Harrier 2’s ergonomic handle is built with textured G-10 scales and a stainless steel backspacer. It also includes minimalist stainless steel liners nested into the interior surfaces of the scales. The liners provide enhanced structural strength and a foundation for the knife’s four-position pocket clip while keeping the handle thin and pocket friendly. Assembled with screw-together construction for the precise alignment and tensioning of all parts, the handle also has a beautifully finished sanded back and a sturdy back lock mechanism with a Boye Dent to help prevent unintentional lock release during use.

An exciting new addition to the growing byrd line of knives, the Harrier 2 not only fulfills the true potential of its namesake, but defines a new standard of design and quality for this budget-conscious brand.

We’ve all heard the saying “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” but in the world of reliable, high-performance cutting tools, not all imitation is good or necessarily sincere. As a leader and innovator in the cutlery industry, Spyderco has always had to contend with imitators who copy our designs and produce low-priced, low-quality counterfeits of them. While we continue to wage the war against knock-offs every day, 15 years ago, we decided to beat them at their own game by establishing our byrd line of knives.

In simple terms, byrd knives were created to provide all the proven functionality of Spyderco’s industry-leading CLIPIT® knives, but in a much more affordable form. We did that by adapting some of our best-selling Spyderco models to more streamlined designs, making careful compromises in materials, and producing byrd knives in China, where production costs are substantially lower than other countries. Our goal was to produce our own low-cost knives that were extremely price competitive, yet delivered a much higher level of quality and performance.

Initially, the blade steel for byrd knives was 8Cr13MoV stainless steel—a workhorse steel that offers an excellent balance of affordability, edge holding, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Still the primary steel used on most byrd knives, it was recently joined by CTS® BD1stainless on select byrd models like the Raven™ and Crow™.

Like their Spyderco brethren, the handles of byrd knives include a choice of G-10 scales with stainless steel liners, molded fiberglass-reinforced nylon scales with stainless liners, and solid stainless steel scales reminiscent of Spyderco’s classic models. Some elite byrd knives even offer precision-machined solid titanium scales.

The most popular models in the byrd line—the Cara Cara™ 2, Meadowlark™ 2, and Robin™ 2—were inspired by the Spyderco Endura® 4, Delica® 4, and Dragonfly™, respectively. However the byrd line doesn’t stop there. It also includes a number of best-selling original designs like the Crossbill™ and Flight™.

Although the first 15 years of the byrd line have presented some challenges, we are very proud to have achieved our primary goal by creating a distinctive family of performance-oriented knives that are well within the reach of practically any budget. In the process, we have also helped inspire many satisfied byrd owners to become die-hard knife aficionados who appreciate and invest in more expensive brands as well.

In early June, the Spyderco Crew traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to exhibit at the 38th annual Blade Show. The world’s largest knife show, it showcases more than 1,000 manufacturers, knifemakers, collectors, dealers, and purveyors and attracts thousands of attendees from all over the world. This incredible event also plays host to Blade Magazine’s Knife-Of-The-Year® Awards, the Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame© induction ceremony, BladeSports' World Championship cutting competition, and a variety of seminars, demonstrations, and other activities.

At this year’s show, held from April 7-9, Spyderco was honored to receive the Blade Magazine’s coveted Most Innovative American Design award for the recently released Para™ 3 Lightweight. Spyderco-sponsored Donavon Phillips, one of the driving forces behind BladeSports International, also dominated the BladeSports competition at the show to win his first World Championship title in that dynamic sport.

Attendees lined up hours in advance to gain entrance to the show and crowd enthusiasm was at an all-time high. In addition to exhibiting our full product line, Spyderco founders Sal and Gail Glesser and their son Eric shared a sneak peek at a number of prototypes and concept models, providing a rare insight into the future of the brand. We were also honored to visit with a number of Spyderco’s brilliant custom collaborators, including Fred Perrin, Marcin Slysz, Murray Carter, Lance Clinton, Jot Singh Khalsa, Serge Panchenko, and Bob Terzuola.

On the sales side, the Spyderco Crew was very happy to reconnect with many of our key dealers and distributors and proud to offer show attendees the opportunity to purchase the full range of Spyderco and byrd products at enticing discounts.

We are extremely grateful to all who attended for making this year’s Blade Show an outstanding success and for making the Spyderco booth a must-see destination at the show!

With the dust barely settled from the Blade Show, the Spyderco sales team once again set up shop to exhibit at the Outdoor Retailer (OR) Summer Market. Held in our own backyard in Denver from June 18-20, this event is North America’s largest outdoor industry tradeshow. Featuring exhibitors and attendees from all over the globe, it is one of the premier networking opportunities for manufacturers, dealers, and media influencers to share their interest in the latest outdoor products. Thanks to everyone who visited us at OR for your interest in Spyderco!
