NCI Salinas and all other NCI and Achievement House locations recently launched a new Community-based Day Program, which is offering work and social training for adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. Meanwhile, several NCI participants have been offered jobs in the community.
The new program helps individuals with disabilities live and work in their community. In particular, the Community-based Day Program helps participants integrate into their communities by providing training for work, healthy living and socialization. NCI Salinas began its Community-based Day Program in May, and now there are plans to expand in Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties.
The success of the NCI programs has been demonstrated by several participants who have entered the local workforce. Three former NCI Thrift Store employees recently found work in community jobs at Kohl’s, Marshalls and Avila Construction while a crew member from the Gilroy janitorial crew was recently hired for a janitorial position at the California Highway Patrol in Gilroy. And that’s just a small sampling of the success stories. Since January, NCI Salinas participants have been placed in jobs at Seaside Recreational Department; Sports Authority; Ross; Safeway; Cal State University, Monterey Bay; Nicklaus Golf Club; Home Depot; Monterey Pacifica Vineyards; Hollister’s and Mission Linen.
We’re thankful to the community, which has helped by providing work opportunities, volunteers and donations at the thrift store. The donations help us increase sales, which then leads to more job training opportunities for adults with disabilities.
