Esperance Shire Reviews Wards
The Shire of Esperance has recently finalised a review of its wards and representation to ensure a similar ratio of Councillors to electors within the Esperance region.
Currently the Shire has two wards, with three Councillors representing the Rural Ward, and six representing the Town Ward.
During the April 2020 Ordinary Council Meeting, Council resolved to undertake the review and begin the process of community consultation.
Council considered all feedback at the October 2020 Ordinary Council Meeting and resolved to;
  • Adjust the electoral ward boundary to increase the size of the Town Ward and reduce the size of the Rural Ward; and
  • Adjust the number of Councillors representing the Rural Ward to two (from three) and the number of Councillors representing the Town Ward to seven (from six).
The changes will be implemented at this year’s local government elections in October, when four positions on Council will be up for election in the Town Ward.
Esperance Shire President Ian Mickel said the review was important to make sure everyone, no matter where they lived within the Shire, was represented equally.
“Equal representation is the cornerstone of every democracy and we need to make sure our voters living in town or rurally have a level playing field,” he said.
“These changes will ensure that the number of Councillors elected by our community reflect our population.
“I would like to thank all those who submitted their feedback during the consultation process, contributing to this review.”
Shire of Esperance CEO Shane Burge said a review into the Shire’s wards takes place every eight years.
“We are required to regularly analyse our ward system to ensure all electors are given equal representation,” he said.
“Some electors may find themselves voting in a different ward in the upcoming election than previously, so I encourage everyone to take a look at the altered ward boundaries prior to October.
“If you are unsure which ward you are in, even after reviewing the maps, please ring the Shire on 9071 0666 and we will be able to advise you.”
