President's Note

April showers bring May flowers - How true is this statement!  We are definitely enjoying the warmer weather and the longer days.  Sadly there is a downside to this as well in that it also sends the message to our kids that summer is near, they want to spend more time outside exploring, and later bedtime hours.  Which makes for increased tiredness in the morning and throughout the day.  Thankfully, we're weeks away from summer vacation and they can finally expel the excess energies outside!
LENA Board has been busy organizing events for the upcoming months.  We also welcomed new members to the Board (thank you all who have expressed an interest); Luke, Cristel, and Nancy.  We will get to know them in the coming months.  We would like to especially thank Bill Curtis for his continued contributions as our acting-VP in the past few months.  Erica has recently resigned from the Board as well to focus on other personal commitments.  We wish them well and again thank them for their contributions.  We hope to see them both at one of the upcoming events or around the neighborhood.
Another new and exciting change is coming to LENA - in an effort to streamline the membership renewal and sign up process, we will be accepting membership dues online!  This will be in addition to payments via checks or cash.  We hope to have this feature available by the end of the week.  Keep an eye out for the announcement!
As for the overall engagement, we are still wanting to hear from you.  Please keep the comments coming.  Send us your thoughts and ideas via email.  Another highlight from this month's meeting was the request and/or petition from a neighbor regarding parking restrictions on W Lakeview and Buckeye Road.  Currently, there is parking restrictions on W Lakeview Avenue during school hours (Monona Grove School District).  Preliminary survey has been conducted to neighbors on W Lakeview to E Dean however no decision has been made at this time and is likely to be further discussed at next month's meeting.  If you have any questions or concerns, please attend the meeting or email concerns and/or questions to

Neighborhood Pub Crawl

The popular event is back!  Join neighbors as we "crawl" our way East on Cottage Grove Road, ending at Mike's Horseshoe Bar.  We will meet at Jade Monkey at 6PM on Saturday May 20.
Cottage Grove Road Activity Centers Plan
A statement by City Planner, Rebecca Cnare:  The City is undertaking a focused planning effort to analyze opportunities for creating exiting and viable neighborhood activity nodes along Cottage Grove Road.  It will address land use, urban design, and connectivity to the abutting residential neighborhoods.  This plan is not a redevelopment project, and only offers guidance and determines parameters for any future redevelopment that would only be initiated by property owners.  Please visit our City's Planning Division Website at Cottage Grove Road Activity Centers Plan for additional information about this planning process.

Welcome Luke Wagner, Nancy Werlein and Crystel Preuss to the LENA Board!  We will learn more about these new Board members soon!

There's still time to join Lake Edge CSA!

Wanted: Newsletter Coordinator

After many years serving as the neighborhood newsletter coordinator, Al Kent is ready to pass on the torch to another neighbor.  According to Al, the experience has been wonderful as he got to know many neighbors.  The position requires very little time commitment.  What does it take?  Twice a year, about two to three hours to coordinate the distribution of the printed newsletters to all households and businesses in the neighborhood.  To ensure a smooth transition, Al has agreed to provide training to the new coordinator.  If you're interested in helping out, send us an email at  LENA Board would like to recognize and thank Al for his years of service.  Thank you, Al!

A Word From Our Sponsor.....
Rutabaga Paddlesports
For over 35 years, Rutabaga Paddlesports has been an authentic, paddler-owned and operated specialty shop. We sell, service and rent the best of the best equipment in Paddlesports.  Rutabaga Outdoor Programs is still the largest flat-water paddling school in the country, with classes for all ages in all disciplines, certification courses for ACA and BCU, and master classes by instructors from all over North America.  We received numerous prestigious awards since 2003.  But more importantly, we are a small, family-owned and operated business.  As Darren Bush, owner of Rutabaga Paddlesports indicated "I have the opportunity to make choices that larger box stores can't. I'm proud to say we never left value and service. We like being an independent, single-store specialty retailer, because if you call us, you don't get a call center, you get one of us.
We're thankful for you, our customers, for allowing all of us to make a living doing what we love. We promise to do our utmost to provide you with good prices, great gear, and staff-tested tools for great experiences. If we don't measure up to your expectations, call me at 608.310.3850 (my direct line). We'll make it right; we always do."
