President's Note

I was looking forward to spring as the snow has melted and the sight of early spring bloomers emerging from the frozen ground.  That all went out the window as we now have a few inches of snow accumulation on the ground.  LENA Board members have been busy planning and organizing the events for this year.  We will begin with the tradition in our efforts to contribute to the environment in a neighborhood park clean up, an homage to the Earth's Day Celebration.  This year, Earth's Day falls on a Saturday, April 22.  While we typically organize our park clean up effort in alignment to the actual date, we will instead celebrate the weekend after, on Saturday, April 29 to avoid conflict with neighbors planning to attend the march at the Capital Square on April 22.  New this year will be our plan to work on two of our neighborhood parks; Quaker and Lake Edge.  Mark your calendars - more details to come!
Looking ahead, the neighborhood plant exchange is scheduled for May 20 and the annual garage sale (weekend of June 23 - 25).  This year's garage sale will be joined by our neighbors in Glendale and the St Luke's Lootsa Loot is making is return after a period of hiatus.  If you plan on having a garage sale this year, you may want to consider joining neighbors in the neighborhood.  Details for sign up will be announced soon.  There are other events in the queue which will be announced in the upcoming weeks.  If you have any ideas or would like to help chair or host an event, please let us know via email.

What's New
Gypsy Moth Aerial Treatment

Lake Edge will be receiving aerial spray treatments for gypsy moths this spring which affects approximately 37.7 block acres in the neighborhood (view map).  According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, "The insecticides used are either Foray, a formulation of the bacterial insecticide Bacillus thruingiensis kurstakii (Btk) or Gypcheck, a viral insecticide specific to gypsy moth caterpillars.

Gypchek is only used where endangered or threatened moths or butterflies are present. Both Btk and Gypchek are unlikely to cause any adverse health reactions.  Small airplanes will spray Btk and Gypchek in late May and early June, beginning very early in the morning.  Homeowners in areas to be sprayed are encouraged to stay indoors with windows closed in order to avoid direct exposure to the spray.  It is sticky and smells a bit like stale beer.

The suppression program is managed under State Statute 26.30 and Natural Resources Board Rule number 47.

Spaanem Reservoir Repainting Survey
Input wanted: Madison Water Utility is repainting the water tower, Well 9, between Spaanem and Turner this summer.  Here's your chance to have an input on the color.  Due to cost, paintings or writings are out of scope and the color chosen must be dark (e.g. no pastels).  Complete the short survey to indicate your color preference.  Click here for the survey.  Survey will be open until March 31.
Note: It'll be another 20 years before the tower is repainted so choose wisely!
