The Lake Edge News

President's Note

Dear neighbors,

We're off to a great start with the majority of the events line up already scheduled for the year and a few more in the works.  We're also very fortunate to have wonderful supporters such as Monona Grove Nursery School and our newest sponsor, Lake Edge Seafood Company.  Their generosity and financial support allows us to sponsor neighborhood events and in giving back to the community (check out the LENA Gives Back article below).  Personally, this is an area I'd love for us to budget for in years to come.  On that note, at this month's meeting, we discussed the need for additional outreach to increase our membership base.  We will be launching our first ever, LENA Membership Drive event.  The date has not been determined however it's likely to take place in May or June.  Stay tuned for updates!

As noted in last month's newsletter, we hosted the judicial candidates in the upcoming spring Dane County Circuit Court race in April.  Both candidates have provided a write up about themselves which are included in this month's publication.  Another topic of interest and closer to home is the proposal from Lake Edge Seafood Company.  John Kitto, the owner was able to attend our meeting to present the proposal for additional seating to be added to the sidewalk similar to Crema Cafe.  Members present at the meeting voted in favor supporting the proposal.  Should you have any concerns or questions, please direct them to Alder Ahrens (

Lastly, we could use more volunteers to help plan upcoming events.  Send me an email at with your availability.  We'd love to have your assistance!

Note:  Please note the alternate locations for our monthly meetings.  Due to library programming, we are not able to have our meetings at the meeting room of Pinney Library for the majority of the year.  We will send out notifications in advanced indicating the location of the meeting.

What's New
The Water Conservation House Project - Planning

Several members of the Madison Water Utility staff members will be present at next month's LENA meeting (April 11) to present the plans for the Water Conservation House project.  The meeting will be held at Pinney Library starting at 7PM.  Please mark your calendar and come learn more about the project from MWU staff and architect!

LENA Pub Crawl 2018

And we are off to a great start!  Hope to see you at our next event.
2018 Earth Day Park Cleanup will be held on Saturday, April 21 starting at 9AM.  We will meet at Quaker Park (on Buckeye Road) and head over to Lake Edge Park at approximately 9:30AM.  Please bring along garden tools such as a rake, gloves, and trash bags.  Also, in a continued effort to minimize the spread of the invasive jumping worms, please consider disinfecting or rinsing your gardening tools.  Hope to see you there!

Sennett Middle School Upham Woods Trip
By Steve McCarthy, LENA Treasurer

Once again LENA is assisting Sennett Middle School by contributing to scholarships for an upcoming Upham Woods trip. This is a wonderful experience for the students, as well as the assisting staff. We offer these scholarships to assist the school for students that might not be able to financially manage the trip and experiences.

Shawn Schroedl, the Trip Coordinator, explains that the students will travel to Upham Woods, in the Wisconsin Dells, to spend 2 nights and 2 ½ days immersed in outdoor education and building relationships with students.   READ MORE ...
A message from Judge Marilyn Townsend

I am running for Circuit Court Judge because I care deeply about fairness and equal justice in our courts.  My commitment is to put my judicial experience, legal skills, and values to work every day, in order to be an impartial and thoughtful judge, help eliminate racial disparity, improve access to justice, and serve all the people of Dane County.

I am the only candidate for judge who is a judge.

Susan Crawford, Judicial Candidate Dane Co. Circuit Court

My name is Susan Crawfod and I'm running for Dane County Circuit Court Judge in the Spring election in 2018.  After speaking with the Lake Edge Neighborhood Association earlier this year, I was pleased to be asked to introduce myself in this month's newsletter.

When it comes to experience, this election presents a clear choice.  READ MORE...
