Drone safety tests in Britain, Yandex’s driverless cars
This week, London-based AI startup LabGenius raised £2.6 million in Seed funding, while an expert report warned that China and Russia are threatening US’s primacy in AI.
Also, new draft regulation has been announced that will require Brits to take safety awareness tests in order to fly drones over 250 grams of weight.

Devices weighing more than 250g might also be banned altogether from flying near airports or above 121 metres of altitude, with the aim of avoiding collisions with passenger jets.

The UK already has a voluntary code of conduct aimed at promoting responsible drone usage, but recent incidents have persuaded the government of the need to introduce new specific laws to deal with the technology. The proposed bill is slated for publication in spring 2018.

Yandex is trialling self-driving cars in snowy Russia
Russia’s Internet giant Yandex trialled its driverless taxis in a snow-covered road last weekend. The test allowed to demo how self-driving vehicles would fare in a scenario other than sunny California’s highways. Snow is regarded as challenging for autonomous cars’ computer vision systems— as it can cover road markings, besides making the road’s surface slippery.

AI startup LabGenius raises £2.6M to develop ‘Evolution Machine’
London-based AI startup LabGenius, has raised £2.6 million in a Seed round led by Kindred Capital and Acequia Capital. Founded in 2012 by James Field and Rhys Algar, LabGenius aims at creating new biological materials by combining AI with DNA synthesis technology and robotics.
