Humans of IT

Undergraduate FIT Student Engagement Committee

Aldeida Aleti - Senior Lecturer for FIT3077 and FIT5136.

It is not easy to move to a new country, and find yourself away from your family and friends. The first months are always the hardest. I am from Albania, and did my undergrad in Istanbul, a city of almost 20 million people. The culture shock was unimaginable, but I survived. Actually, it was better than that. I have to admit, the beginning was hard, but it really opened my eyes and mind to a richer world, I learned about different ways of doing things, and made amazing friendships. The city that you first move to on your own becomes the love of your life, and Istanbul is mine. There were not many females in my class (20 out of 120), nevertheless the top three students were females. Isn't that amazing!

Many successful people share their stories and what has worked for them. It is important that we learn from their experiences, as we all stand on the shoulders of giants. But it is my belief that we should listen to ourselves carefully. We all have different skills and goals. Self-reflection will help you find YOUR way, and be your authentic self. Don't be afraid to have your own voice.

Ask Ghina

Q. I'm bored. Entertain me.
A.  Me too tbh. So here's what I'll be doing this week:

  • The Peer Mentor Program "Destress with FIT" event -- on TODAY 2-4pm. Card games, Super Smash Bros, bubble wrap, a helium tank and a whole bunch of other de-stressers as well!
  • Visting the digital exhibition on Angkor Wat at Hargrave-Andrew Library - they've even got virtual reconstructions of the temples to see what they might've looked like almost a millennium ago.
  • Google's "Life as an Intern" talk tonight at 6:30pm. Their events are always so chill and fun, with the added bonus of free swag of course.
