Robert Koch (L) - Computational Science / Electrical & Computer Systems Engineering & Jonathan Rutherford (R) - Business Information Systems / Commerce & , WINNERS - Telstra University Challenge 2016
We recently participated in the Telstra University Challenge 2016 in a group of six students from a bunch of different courses and faculties across Monash. The TUC challenges Uni students to use technology to build a marketable solution for a not-for-profit's problem. We decided to tackle the problem posed by Keep Australia Beautiful, with a goal to create positive social change that combatted a littering culture.
After much deliberation, we finally decided to build smart bins that could be connected to the Internet of Things. We called our creations "Bin Monsters” and planned to send the Monsters into a selection of schools. The bins collect all kinds of data about their rubbish collection and their movements, with an aim to educate kids about the impact of rubbish as well as a basic understanding of data. Check out our video.
It was an awesome experience to work on this project with a great team of students, and excellent mentoring from some very experienced and knowledgeable staff. All in all it was a wonderful experience competing, and we would highly recommend you taking up every opportunity to practise your skills!
