We recently participated in the Telstra University Challenge 2016 in a group of six students from a bunch of different courses and faculties across Monash. The TUC challenges Uni students to use technology to build a marketable solution for a not-for-profit's problem. We decided to tackle the problem posed by Keep Australia Beautiful, with a goal to create positive social change that combatted a littering culture.

After much deliberation, we finally decided to build smart bins that could be connected to the Internet of Things. We called our creations "Bin Monsters” and planned to send the Monsters into a selection of schools. The bins collect all kinds of data about their rubbish collection and their movements, with an aim to educate kids about the impact of rubbish as well as a basic understanding of data. Check out our video.

It was an awesome experience to work on this project with a great team of students, and excellent mentoring from some very experienced and knowledgeable staff. All in all it was a wonderful experience competing, and we would highly recommend you taking up every opportunity to practise your skills!

We Did It!

  • This year's UNIHACK organised by our Monash WIRED IT club, was the biggest yet. Teams this year displayed impressive skills - all projects built within 24 hours. Monash came very close to taking out the trifecta, winning second and third place. Congratulations to all those involved!
  • Our Peer Mentors are doing a brilliant job helping our new students settle in with events like the Movie Night - it was great fun watching Rush Hour and eating ridiculous amounts of KFC.

Did You Know?

Fembots and Feminism: who creates digital intelligence?

"Why are so many virtual assistants female? Why do AI movies almost always have a female sex robot? Can Silicon Valley avoid ‘brogrammer’ culture creeping into code? We see our future of intelligent machines through the lens of art and popular culture. How can art and creative culture help form the reality we want?"

Watch a number of speakers including our Deputy Dean Ann Nicholson to understand how art and artists can help reframe the way we think about our future with Intelligence missions.

Buzz Word

Internet of Things

This is the concept of basically connecting any device with an on and off switch to the Internet (and/or to each other). This includes everything from cellphones, coffee makers, washing machines, headphones, lamps, wearable devices and almost anything else you can think of.

How the Internet of Things is changing us.

Ask Terence

Q. Hi Terence, #mostpeoplesay you are a secret poet. True or False,
All day, everyday, there was only one item my heart desired
Spent time in the IT Foyer, with others I conspired

No chance, never ever, not in my day
No choice but to accept, "inevitable" as we say.

But then, today - a massive shockwave
The IT building, with our begging, finally has a MICROWAVE
