Graduate Research Student Retreat, Inverloch July 2016 - A resounding success!

Our Faculty's first Graduate Research Student Retreat was a joyous event with 94 students, including six from Malaysia, academics, GR support staff and invited guests. The retreat strengthened our graduate research student community by providing the time and space to foster academic and social connections across the Faculty. 

Our wonderful guest speakers Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte, Dr Chris Behrenbruch and Ms Chris Gonsalvez shared their experiences with generating research and business ideas, starting collaborations and engaging industry. Other highlights were the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition to share ideas and information about each others research, the student-led workshops providing relevant feedback to peers and the Womens Networking breakfast.

2016 Innovation Showcase Research Posters - EoI’s due

The Faculty of Information Technology will hold its fourth annual research innovation event, Innovation Showcase, in October 17 or 18 (TBC), 2016. This event will be held in a high profile Melbourne city venue and attendance by ‘invitation only'. The event showcases the most innovative research being undertaken by the Faculty’s researchers and our graduate research students. You are invited to apply to be a part of the showcase's research poster competition. The best posters wins a $500 prize. Expression of Interest closing date 17 August. ACS Foundation - Scholarships and Internships

The ACS Foundation provides career advice, research grants and university scholarships to strengthen our innovative future. The Foundation facilitates relevant industry experience placements for students with large and small technology companies. Sponsor organisations range from IBM, CBA, Dell, Microsoft and Adobe to growing SME's such as eCorner, Dataweave and Clear2Pay. A current Caulfield campus PhD student is undertaking an internship funded by a ACS Foundation scholarship.

Introducing PhD candidate Shampa Shahriyar, 2014 winner of the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, the Innovation Showcase Research poster, and the 2015 recipient of a Facebook scholarship to attend Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) in Arizona.  

Shampa’s research interest is multiview video coding; especially depth coding and depth image based rendering. In particular, she works on efficient depth coding and rendering to support 3D and multiple view video transmission. Her PhD work relates to 3D video technologies, which has direct contribution in television, ubiquitous health, and the sports industry. More details can be found here.

Shampa inspired the formation of FIT's Women in IT Research  Network (WiTRN) in 2015, a support network for our female graduate research students. Please contact Helen Cridland to join the FB group.

Achievements

Entrepreneurship 
Our PhD student David Hemmi has been selected to take part in the 2016 Monash-Ben-Gurion University Student Entrepreneurship Program, which promotes entrepreneurship, and gives students the opportunity to learn about another country and culture, through working closely with students from that culture and visiting that country.
