Michael Brand - Solve this riddle

Michael Brand  - Associate Professor - Data Science, warming up for some Kinect home fitness.

There’s no feeling like knowing you’ve made a change in the world – even a small one – for the better. It was a perspective-altering experience when Xbox Kinect, using the algorithms I developed, became the fastest selling consumer electronics device ever. Sure we were selling three times as fast as the iPhone ever did, but the real “wow” came when we found out what people were doing with the technology: far beyond simple gaming, people were using Kinects to build robots that were far more aware of their environments (enough to fly indoors, navigate through complex buildings or build automated maps of their surroundings), to construct augmented and virtual realities, and to invent human-computer interaction methods that we never dreamed of. It was revolutionary.

Over the last decade I tried to make another small change for the better - “Using your Head is Permitted”, which now enjoys a following from around the world. Through the use of mathematical riddles, it reminds readers that maths are not about test scores (or even about numbers), but are, rather, all about curiosity, creativity and clear thinking. Head over to solve a riddle.

The current wave now changing the world is Big Data. Can you harness it to make the world better?

Ask Ghina

Q. Hey Ghina, I got into IT because I wanted to learn about computers, but they use so many words they expect me to know and I'm super lost. Is IT not for me? What should I do?
A. Been there, done that. We've all got to start somewhere. Everyone feels lost at the beginning, but with time and experience you'll find your place and forget all about these worries. My advice is, be active to look for answers:

  • Start by reading your textbooks and look up words that you don't understand.
  • If you have any questions/uncertainties about your unit, setup a consultation time with your tutor - view their schedule times in Moodle or visit the student resources page
  • Your Course Director can also point you in the right direction if you are not sure which IT degree is suitable for you.
  • Or, the Career Education Consultant team at Monash Connect can also assist you with choosing the right career path - view the drop-in times.

Thank you for your question, Anonymous!
