Edition 10

Week Nine; the end is nigh. So here's a little advice..

"On your resume, instead of listing your GPA (which we no longer use to determine candidacy), give us details about your experience at hackathons, coding competitions, or programming assignments. Just because it isn't an academic credential doesn't make it any less relevant." - Keawe Block, a recruiter at Google.

Prayank Kashyap on agile philosophy

Alumni - Prayank Kashyap, Masters in Information Technology/Masters in Business Information Systems. As part of the Industry Experience unit, he worked with his team to develop 'MEDIMATE' a website that will help people find doctors in Victoria, who can speak their native language.

When I did my industry experience project at Monash last semester, I got to use the Agile-Scrum methodology. Monash provided the perfect platform to learn about the processes in a University environment with guidance from the best academic and industry mentors.  While the process was quite gruelling at times, now working in industry, I appreciate the teachings at Monash.
The motto of Agile is simply ‘People before Process’ - it focuses on rapid software development.  It was chaotic in the beginning as we learnt how to develop rapidly and deliver functionality incrementally. I remember that our first meeting was terrible as none of us knew what to discuss in the meeting. We went on different tangents and it was unsuccessful. After a couple of iterations, it was very different, I recognised the underlying importance of the processes. I learnt a great deal by being receptive to others, taking on feedback, working well with my team and thinking analytically and practically, critical skills in a fast-paced industry.
Even though it was hectic, it paid off in the end as the quality of we work produced was really high, and would make a difference to our community. And in our team's case, it was exciting to win the best project in our category at the IE Project Expo.
My advice to you is there is a lot to learn and you must be willing to acquire the knowledge and skills. This willingness plays a paramount role in being successful in industry.

Buzz Word

One of the oldest and more diffused Agile methodologies. Its major traits are the presence of timeboxed iterations (sprints), where a subset of the features present in the product backlog has to be completed.

What does a scrum master do anyways?

Ask Ghina

Q. Hey Ghina, got any strategies for success: Group Assignments..?
First, you need to ensure your project methodology is not fragile.
You know what's a good one? Agile!

Expand your horizons, don't be bound by those confinements,
that's the way you can smash those assignments.

I'm not entirely sure my advice is much help, to be frank.
But I believe in your abilities, you're pretty dank.

To make sure this glorious knowledge does not disappear,
make sure to consolidate it with this link, right here
