Dr Parthan Kasarapu wins the FIT inaugural Best Doctoral Paper Award.
The award, sponsored by SCRAM Software, was announced at the 2016 Innovation Showcase. It is for the best research paper (conference or journal paper) by a graduate research student accepted in the previous year and judged based on the significance of the problem studied, its potential impact and the ranking/reputation of the journal/conference. Recent PhD graduand, Parthan Kasarapu won for his paper: P Kasarapu & L Allison (2015). Minimum message length estimation of mixtures of multivariate Gaussian and von Mises-Fisher distributions. Machine Learning 100 (2-3), 333-378.

Parthan is now based in Brisbane where he is a Postdoctoral Fellow at CSIRO . He is working towards developing data science and machine learning methods to facilitate the analyses of Big Data in the Genomics space.
This award is one of a number of laurels Parthan has received. In 2015 he was selected to participate in the 3rd Heidelberg Laureate Forum held in Heidelberg, Germany. Parthan was one of just 200 students and early-career researchers selected from around the world. The forum provides a unique opportunity for attendees to mix with winners of the top awards from the fields of computer science and mathematics.  These award winners include holders of the ACM A.M Turing Award, the Nevanlinna Prize, the Fields Medal and the Abel Prize

Parthan's selection continues the Faculty’s remarkable success in being selected for the Forum; he is Monash FIT’s fifth participant, Parthan joins our other Faculty Heidelberg Laureate Forum participants; in 2013  Dr Kerri Morgan and Dr Aldeida Aleti, in 2014 Assoc. Professor Michael Brand and Dr Aamir Cheema.  2015 was a huge year for Parthan he was also a coordinator of the Machine Learning Bootcamp along with FIT PhD student: Shenjun Zhong and Warwick University (UK) Engineering Department PhD students Freeha Azmat and Torgyn Shaikhina.

Parthan's awards are of great credit to him and his supervisors, Dr Arun Konagurthu and Professor Maria Garcia de la Banda.
