Spotlight on Australia

Special Olympics Australia is delighted to be represented by 121 athletes who are heading across the Tasman to compete in the third Trans Tasman Tournament against New Zealand. Our athletes are training hard and are excitedly waiting to receive their team uniforms. One athlete who is super excited to be heading to New Zealand is 15-year old Poppe-Simone Sakr who is the youngest member of the Australian delegation and this will be her first overseas trip.

Poppe says: “I am proud and honoured to represent Australia especially since I haven't been swimming for very long. I love how at Special Olympics everyone is supportive and no-one judges me. It has improved my life lots because I can stay fit and have a good time. I am really proud of my gold medal at the State Games even though I got a dislocated knee and a torn ligament! I do not actually have a sporting hero but I have a modelling hero who is Josephine Skriver.

She is a young strong role model that stood up to a lot of bullying and I admire her. I want to be a famous model who gives back to the community. I am just so excited to be selected and I am going to work so hard.” Poppe will compete for the state of Victoria in the 50m freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke as well as the 50m freestyle relay.

Introducing Swimming Waikato

Special Olympics New Zealand and Australia are thrilled to be working alongside Swimming Waikato for this 2016 event, their facilities are top notch and their assistance has made the planning of our very large swimming schedule a very easy process.

"The team at Swimming Waikato are feeling privileged and excited to be hosting the swimming event at this year's Trans Tasman Tournament at Hamilton’s Waterworld.  Our role is to deliver a professional and fun event for the more than 300 swimmers from across both sides of the Tasman who are taking part.  Our team of officials are some of the best in the country, we’re confident the event will live up to all expectations.

Our wider group of volunteers, who will be assisting with additional roles such as timekeeping, are excited to the have opportunity to showcase swimming in the Waikato and with just on two months to go, we’re really sensing a buzz amongst all those who are taking part", says Cherie McCleery, Executive Officer.
