Chemsafety Newsletter - April 2020

Welcome to Chemsafety's April Newsletter.  In this edition;

Managing Director Update

I hope everyone is staying safe and adjusting to this new way of life.  For some of us it will be a challenging time but hopefully a time for opportunity, and a time for innovation.

Chemsafety is also adapting to this new way of doing business and we are taking the time to develop new ways of working.  We are using Microsoft Teams to keep in touch and we are developing online training courses for asbestos awareness, chemical handling, and certified handlers.  Worksafe have given us the go ahead to do remote location compliance certificates, with a follow up site visit after lockdown ends, to get our customers compliant.

We have been fortunate enough to be able to provide respirator fit testing to people working in the healthcare sector.  This has proven to be vital as a number of people haven’t had a good fit which could put them at risk.  As always, our team are available by phone to assist with any questions you have and you can also find some COVID related resources on our website http://www.chemsafety.co.nz/special-resources

Stay safe and healthy
Bridgette Jennings - Managing Director

Time to Update your ERP?

Emergency response plans (ERP) are required for many hazardous substances when the threshold is exceeded. This lockdown period could be your chance to ensure that your current ERP contains all of the required details. While the regulations outline the full requirements, your plan essentially needs to;
  • Describe all actions to be taken in the event of all reasonably foreseeable emergencies
  • Identify the people with responsibilities for these actions and provide information on their skills and how to contact them,
  • Outline how to get information regarding the properties and means of controlling any hazardous substances that may be involved
  • Describe how to contact the emergency services and where any emergency equipment (e.g. fire extinguishers, spill kits) are located on site.
Your ERP must also contain an inventory of the hazardous substances on site and a site plan detailing where they are located.  If you need help to set up your ERP please contact Sara.

Respirator Fit Testing

Respirator fit testing is vital to ensure the respirators provided give the wearer the specified protection.  All face shapes are different and that means that different styles of respirators won’t fit every face shape.

Some people may need a different style, size or model of respirator and businesses should be prepared for that.  For example some disposable respirators which require the nose clip to be sculpted to the nose don’t fit people well if they have a larger nose or some people with finer features have trouble fitting a one size fits all disposable respirator.

Chemsafety can assist with providing advice on when respiratory protection is required, what level of respiratory protection is needed, and what fit testing and other requirements is needed.  We will provide advice based on the hierarchy of controls with PPE being the last resort.  If respiratory protection is indicated our team of fit testers can visit site (essential services only during lockdown) and undertake this vital work.

If you'd like more information please contact Bridgette

COVID19 Resources

We've put together a collection of information to help our clients through the COVID19 lockdown on our special resources page on our website.

We've included some technical information on the differences between disposable and surgical masks as well as how to take gloves off correctly.

Alot of us will be taking the opportunity to give our homes a good clean so we've also included some instruction on how to best clean any mould that may appear.

SafeGuard Magazine have also made their April publication free online.  You'll be able to read Bridgette's article on how PPE is not always the answer and that simple solutions are sometimes the most effective.

We hope you find the information helpful.
