Andreas Wirth Announces Exciting Shift to the European Le Mans Series

Le Castellet, France - March 22, 2016

Andreas Wirth is thrilled to announce today, his plans for the 2016 season.

This year, Wirth shifts career gears in a big way, moving up the ranks to the series inspired by the 24 Hours of Le Mans - the European Le Mans Series (ELMS).

Coming from seven years in sports cars and ten years in open wheel racing prior to that, this marks a big turning point in Wirth’s career.

Wirth will compete for Russian-based SMP Racing in their #32 BR01 Nissan-powered entry to the LMP2 class of the ELMS and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2016.
Andreas Wirth (of Germany), Julian Leal (of Columbia) and Stefano Coletti (of Monaco) will form an all-new driver line up for the Russian team. Despite having no previous LMP2 experience, this multi-national trio is a strong driver line-up, each climbing behind the wheel with their own history of success.

The team has been underway for some time now, testing in France, and participating last week in the Dunlop Tire test at Aragon in Spain. The trio are meshing well and are confident they will bring some strong results this year.

Commenting on his big news, the change and challenges, Wirth had this to say:
“2016 is definitely turning out to be a big year for me! I’m very excited to be competing in the LMP2 class of the ELMS this year – the BR01 is such a cool car, and SMP Racing is a very impressive organization – it’s pretty exciting to be a part of something so big. There’s really a lot of passion at SMP, the whole team is great to work with and everything is very professional – I’m really looking forward to going racing.  For sure this will be a challenging year, but I’m totally up for it! Things are coming together really well with my new teammates, (Julian and Stefano) we may be ‘all-new’, but it’s going to be awesome – we’re having a lot of fun – but most importantly I think we can really achieve a lot on track this year. I want to thank everyone at SMP for this opportunity, and my partners who have stuck with me for so many years – we’ll be giving it all we’ve got to bring home some great results for all of us this year!”
