Dear Colleagues,

Happy Friday!

Earlier this week, Kaiser Health News released its "Bill of the Month."  The latest bill chronicles the story of a 35-year-old patient who had a mammogram confirming a lump that needed further investigation.

The patient used the price estimator tool on HCA-owned Grand Strand Health's website to query a cash estimate:

Seeing that the cash estimate was only $1,400 and knowing that she had commercial insurance, the patient opted to use her insurance.

Then, the bill came...

Even with insurance, the patient's out-of-pocket was $5,169.67, significantly higher than the cash estimate of $1,400.

When confronted with this disparity, the hospital said there was a "glitch" in their price estimator, and the cash price is actually between $8,000 and $11,500:

With increased price transparency enforcement on the horizon (CMS awarded a $2.5MM audit contract last month), please take price transparency seriously.
