Electrifying the Transportation Sector
The journal ACS Catalysis recently published Washington Research Foundation Innovation  Fellow in Clean Energy, Nirala Singh’s and Chemistry Professor Charles Campbell’s research on electrochemical hydrogenation of phenol. This reaction serves as a model for the conversion of waste biomass (such as lignin) into transportation fuels using renewable electricity. ACS CATALYSIS Article

"Optimal Participation of an Electric Vehicle Aggregator in Day-Ahead Energy and Reserve Markets"
IEEE Transactions on Power Systems published this paper from Professor Ortega-Vazquez and CEI Graduate Fellows Mushfiqur R. Sarker and Yury Dvorkin. In it, they propose a bidding strategy for aggregators (wholesale buyers or brokers of a utility service) to maximize their profits from participating in competitive energy and different regulating reserves markets, while compensating electric vehicle owners for degradation. CEI & Campus Allies Encourage Young Women to Pursue Photonics
In October, CEI, Women in Chemical Engineering, the Society of Women Engineers, Women in Chemical Sciences, and Husky Gamers hosted a Photonics Fair at UW for young women in grades K-12. Over 50 girls (including a few Girl Scout troops) participated in our demos meant to excite them about exploring STEM topics. More

DOE & WA Sign MOU on Grid Modernization at CEI
On October 18, 2016, CEI hosted a DOE and regional delegation for the signing of an MOU on grid modernization.  CEI Director Dan Schwartz and Electrical Engineering Professor Daniel Kirschen participated in the conversation about our transactive campus project with WSU and PNNL, and grid cybersecurity. DOE Report on Regional Opportunities for Clean Energy Tech Innovation
The DOE recently released a new report entitled, “Exploring Regional Opportunities in the U.S. for Clean Energy Technology Innovation.” Volume I summarizes the results of 14 university-hosted regional forums that DOE participated in on regional clean energy innovation. On August 15, CEI hosted one of these forums, the Northwest Regional Clean Energy Innovation Partnership (RCEIP) Workshop, at the UW with U.S. Secretary of Energy J. Moniz, Governor Jay Inslee, Senator Maria Cantwell, Representative Kilmer as well as representatives from  local cleantech companies, national labs, and regional organizations. The Northwest Regional Clean Energy Innovation Partnership Workshop Report is available here.
