What are your holiday traditions?

Winter Break is a much appreciated reprieve from my busy school work. I am looking forward to coming back to Oregon to experience a snowy break, but wish it came without icy driving. The holidays are about family, so I will be spending Christmas and New Years with them. I am looking forward to another great year for our Section and am excited for everything new we have in store. Hope everyone has a wonderful break and travels safely.

Hey everyone! Some of my favorite and most treasured traditions revolve around the holidays. Around Christmas, I always drive around my town of Eureka and look at all the fun and crazy Christmas decorations. Another Christmas related tradition is trimming the tree, where my whole family and I decorate our tree with our various ornaments and decorating the house in general. Finally, my third holiday tradition is our New Years' Eve monopoly game, which becomes ruthless as the clock draws nearer to 12 am.

Stay safe this holiday season. I can’t wait to see you all at your lodge and section events!

Hi everyone! One of the things that I love about the holiday season is to walk around the streets and take pictures of Christmas trees, decorations and whatever there might be out there. This time of the year, there's a lot of cool things and it's also fun to hang out with my friends while taking pictures as well. Another thing that I love, is that I get to see my old friends that went to college or decided to move from Portland. It's always fun to eat lunch with them or do fun stuff with my old friends. That's what I love about the holiday season.

I hope everyone has a wonderful break and spend time with your friends and families. I am so excited to see all of you at future OA events!!

OA PhilBreak is Philmont’s alternative spring break program, sponsored by the Order of the Arrow and the Philmont Staff Association. Following the Ute Park fire of 2018, the Philmont Conservation Department began more aggressive timber thinning projects in strategic areas of the Ranch. PhilBreak volunteers have the opportunity to assist Conservation Staff with these projects and leave a safer Philmont for the thousands of participants that the Ranch welcomes every summer. Participants will live in Base Camp during the work week, and all meals will be provided.

The cost is $105 and participants must be at least 16 years old.

Sessions:
  • Feb 29-March 7
  • March 7-14
  • March 14-21
  • March 21-28

Trip Itinerary:

Saturday: Volunteers arrive at Philmont and spend the night in Base Camp.

Sunday-Thursday: Crews work on forestry projects, returning to Base Camp at the end of every day

Friday: Participants have the opportunity to go on a hike in the backcountry

Saturday: Volunteers travel home.
On December 27-30, section, region, and national leaders will gather in Dallas, Texas for the 2019 OA National Planning Meeting (NPM). At NPM, these leaders will lay the groundwork for the Order of the Arrow's program in 2020 including electing the new national officers and planning the National Order of the Arrow Conference.

Once again, the Section W-1S Communications Team will be covering the event both from home and on the ground in Texas. Make sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat for our special NPM coverage.

Wauna La-Mon'tay Vigil Selection

On December 7th, Wauna La-Mon'tay Lodge conducted its Vigil selection. The committee was comprised of chapter and lodge officers and their advisers. After much thought and consideration, the committee selected 14 Brotherhood members who have given exceptional service for the last two years to the lodge and Scouting community. The Vigil candidates will become Vigil Honor members after completing a Vigil induction in May. Congratulations to those Arrowmen who were selected for this great honor.
Arrowmen have a unique opportunity to explore one of the BSA's four high adventure bases through OA High Adventure. With five different programs, Arrowmen spend half of the adventure providing cheerful service to the base and surrounding areas and the other half on a customized trek. These programs are a fraction of the cost of a normal trek. Scholarships are available from the section and region that will cover the registration cost. All you have to do is get yourself there.

Registration for 2020 is now open. Visit adventure.oa-bsa.org for more information.
The National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC) is coming up in the summer of 2020. Held every two years on a college campus, NOAC is the premier OA event with over 8,000 Arrowmen gathering for a week a fun, fellowship, training, and excitement. While at NOAC, Arrowmen stay in campus dorms and eat in the campus dining facilities.

NOAC will be held August 3-8, 2020 at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. During NOAC, Arrowmen can participate in a variety of events including athletic competitions, ceremony & dance competitions, fun activities, patch trading, and training classes on almost every topic. One of the highlights of NOAC are the evening arena shows full of theatrics, lights, pyrotechnics, and more.

Interested in attending this week-long, life-changing event? Talk to your lodge chief or lodge adviser for more information about your lodge's contingent or consider attending on staff. Visit
