Date set for Grow West planting day

Preparations are well underway for Grow West’s annual Community Planting Day. This year's event will be held on Sunday 21st July in Ingliston.

PPWCMA project coordinators, Helena and Emma, along with the planting day committee visited the site last week. 4000 trees will be planted on the day to help create a biolink connecting W. James Whyte Island Reserve (The Island) and Werribee Gorge State Park.

Victorian Landcare Grants close on Wednesday 12th June

Applications for support and project grants through the Victorian Landcare Grants 2019-20 close on Wednesday 12th June. The grants are open to Landcare, Friends of, Coastcare and other environment volunteer groups in the region.

Even if you aren't applying for a grant, we encourage you to still complete the Landcare Group Health Survey as it helps to build an accurate snapshot of Landcare and environmental volunteering across Victoria.

Guide to Victoria's pollinator and beneficial insects

The PPWCMA's Regional Agriculture Facilitator, Karen Thomas, has been working with Agribusiness Yarra Valley on something awesome - a guide to common pollinator and beneficial insects commonly found in Victoria.

The guide is part of their work into beneficial insects and native insectaries for IPM (integrated pest management) and is a great starting point in the identification of common pollinator and beneficial insects found in Victoria.

Deepening connections in Deep Creek

Deep Creek and its tributaries south of Darraweit Guim and north of Mickleham provide habitat for several significant species including Platypus, Growling Grass Frog, Southern Brown Toadlet and Swift Parrot.

The PPWCMA is leading a new project called Deepening Connections, which aims reduce the threats to this area through weed and rabbit control across 6,700 hectares of private land.

Intrepid Landcare inspires in the Yarra Ranges

From 31 May to 2 June, 20 young people from across the region came together for the Yarra Ranges Intrepid Landcare Leadership Retreat.

They spent the weekend hearing personal stories of environmental protection and action, making new connections and forming a new Landcare group for young people to connect across the Yarra Ranges.

Nature-based coastal defence

The PPWCMA is excited to be supporting the University of Melbourne to develop sustainable methods to protect our coastal communities from erosion. Engineers at the university have developed a world-first field trial of temperate mangroves grown in purpose-designed pods to help coastal protection.

210 pods have been installed along Port Phillip Bay’s western shoreline at Altona Coastal Park, as well as 210 in Grantville and 105 on the Lang Lang foreshore in Western Port.

Yarra4life becomes coordinating committee of land managers for Yellingbo Conservation Area

As the Yellingbo Conservation Area Draft 10 Year Plan progresses, Yarra4Life’s long standing coordination committee has agreed to step in as the coordinating committee of land managers.

Following an independent review of the Yellingbo Conservation Area Coordinating Committee (YCACC), a partnership between Yarra4Life and DELWP has been established supporting the Yarra4Life Coordination Committee to provide advice and opportunities for collaboration to the agencies implementing the plan.

Living Melbourne presents a transformative approach to respond to urban challenges with nature and aims to create a profound shift in the way we think about, value and grow Melbourne into the future.
