PPWCMA named Regional Land Partnerships service provider

The PPWCMA was pleased to have been selected to deliver the Australian Government's Regional Land Partnerships program for the Port Phillip and Western Port region.

The Regional Land Partnerships program is part of the National Landcare Program and is delivering $450 million in projects to ensure the protection of threatened ecological communities, help our farmers adapt to change and support the great work of community environmental groups.

Biodiversity Response Planning Projects

The Victorian Government announced last week that eight projects worth $3.2 million over three years have been funded for on-ground biodiversity action in the Port Phillip and Western Port region.

These projects will work to secure Victoria’s biodiversity and will directly contribute to the targets of Biodiversity 2037, under the goal ‘Victoria's natural environment is healthy’.

Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grants

Congratulations to the 59 schools, kindergartens, childcare centres and youth groups in the Port Phillip and Western Port region that were recipients of the Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grants.

The provide support for projects that engage young Victorians in outdoor, hands-on, on-ground projects, and environmental learning activities. These projects will lead to both environmental and educational outcomes, as well as health and social benefits.

Help keep our region Queensland Fruit Fly free

Queensland Fruit Fly have been hiding from the cold winter weather, but they're starting to move as the temperature rises. Look for signs of the flies emerging from their hiding places in evergreen trees, native trees, citrus trees and bushes.

Project updates

Wildlife monitoring aids feral cat eradication on French Island

French Island landowners have been working with scientists recently to undertake wildlife monitoring as part of a project to eradicate feral cats from the island and make it a safe haven for threatened species.

The aim is to establish the ‘baseline’ activity of feral cats and native wildlife populations, particularly ground-nesting birds, prior to undertaking intensive broad scale control across the island.

Helmeted Honeyeater set to take flight

It's been a busy year for the Yarra4Life program - Burungma Biik has been transferred into the National Reserve System and stage one works are complete; major habitat restoration works at Coranderrk Estate  have been undertaken; and the final year of the National Landcare Program funded Protecting and Connecting EBPC Listed Species and Communities in the Yarra Ranges' project was successfully completed.

Transforming the Dandenong Creek

Work to transform the Dandenong Creek corridor into a world-class urban Living Link is now powering along. Five local councils (Maroondah, Knox, Monash, Greater Dandenong and Casey) have commenced works at 24 of the total 38 sites, undertaking over 55 hectares of weed control and over 22 hectares of revegetation to fill ‘gaps’ in the corridor.

Integrated Pest Management in Pastures

Thursday 20th September, 10am-1pm, Myrniong

Red Legged Earth Mite is a major pest pressure in pasture based systems and broad spectrum insecticides is often the go-to practice. This workshop will provide practical strategies for managing this pest using an IPM approach, which over time, can reduce the need for pesticides and better support natural enemies.

Frog Census Results & Celebration Night

Wednesday 26 September, 6:45pm-8:30pm
Maroondah Federation Estate, Ringwood

Join PPWCMA, Melbourne Water and the First Friends of Dandenong Creek for a fascinating and inspiring evening where they will review the last 12 months of citizen science frog monitoring along Dandenong Creek. Citizen scientists have put in a magnificent effort during 2017-18, with a total of 197 Frog Census reports submitted.

Grants and Awards

Melbourne Water Community Grants Program

Melbourne Water offer grants annually to volunteer community groups to support them to deliver waterway improvements on public land. Community groups can apply for support grants – up to $1,000 and project grants – up to $20,000.

Applications for the 2018-19 grants program are now open and can be submitted online through SmartyGrants until 11pm, Monday 15 October 2018.

On-farm Energy Grants

Agriculture Victoria has recently rolled out on-farm energy tier 1 grants as part of the Victorian Government's $30 million Agriculture Energy Investment Plan. The grants will provide support to farmers to replace energy inefficient equipment, install more energy efficient systems and enable own-generation capacity. Farmers are encouraged to apply early, as grants are available to eligible primary producers until March 2020 or until available funding is exhausted (whichever comes first).
