Should I keep job searching in the summer, or take a break?

The answer is yes, and yes! Why not do both?

I get it, summer is very short in Calgary and I know it's especially important to take advantage of the vitamin D, longer warm days, and green spaces while you can. This is good for us physically, mentally and spiritually.

Before you throw the job search strategy into the winter mitts basket, it is helpful to contemplate some reasons why hiring slows down during the summer and what you can do about it to your advantage:

1. Hiring decision makers are on vacation. Often senior managers stagger their breaks with other decision makers so it simply takes longer to get consensus on anything and everything. Stay patient but vigilant. Don't hold back on other opportunities if they look like a good fit.

2. Budgeting cycles and fiscal year end may just coincide with the summer (e.g. university academic year end cycles), and maybe no money in the pot... just yet. Understand your target organization, their project lifecycle and emerging needs. Use informational interviews (i.e. research in person!) to dig deeper. Even though the upcoming budget may not be approved for, you may still be able to position yourself into the planning process.

3. Seasonal businesses may be in full swing in the summer months (or gone fishing) and don't have time for hiring or training cycles. The same could be said for various oil & gas projects depending on the particular phase and stage of the work being done at that point in time. Maybe you have a unique set of skills and experience that applies to that particular "season" (so to speak). Again, it helps to understand your target company to anticipate their needs and tailor a personalized approach to make it easy and convincing that hiring you at this time will help them with their current cycles.

4. Summer mentality, "I'll get around to it later". More people are relaxed, less people look for work. Great! With less competition you have better odds of standing out. Look at summer events as an opportunity for networking and meeting people in a more relaxed setting. Choose a summer activity that aligns with your personal interest/musical tastes/curiosity and volunteer for a shift or more. If you want to meet hiring decision makers look to the board. These new connections and experiences from volunteering serve the community and provide you with some cheap summer entertainment in the short term, and may provide invaluable opportunities down the road.

For many people the struggle with coming to terms with being Laid Off still lingers. For some this is an entirely new landscape of figuring out how to market yourself, or simply how to structure your day when unemployed.

If you haven't already done so, please check out the links on the laidoffcalgary.ca website -> we have a resources section and also the private Facebook group page is a place where members ask questions, share and connect freely with each other (respecting our posted Community Agreements).
