How can the library help my job search?
We held a Laid Off Calgary meeting at the downtown library recently in collaboration with a very knowledgeable and helpful Information Specialist. Here are his top 5 tips on how the library can help you with your job search or career transition:
1. Free online courses
Members of the Calgary Public Library have free access to different courses about career and personal development which can be accessed here: https://calgarylibrary.ca/resources/online-courses/ Members now have free access to Lynda.com, a renowned business and technology video tutorial site. You can also take two free Gale Courses per year (a roughly $360.00 value) through the library. These courses are great if you want to sharpen your skills or try something new. If you are interested in picking up another language you can also access Rosetta Stone and choose from 30 languages.
2. Resources for Entrepreneurs
Interesting in exploring your entrepreneurial idea? Sit down with an Idea Coach to brainstorm at Idea Coaching. If you are looking to start a small business or currently have one we have a recurring program called Small Business Tuesdays where the library partners with local business groups to deliver a presentation. Topics include: networking for business, small business loans, and work-life balance. Information about our programs can be found here: https://events.calgarypubliclibrary.com/…/online-registrati…
3. Free Career Advice
The Calgary Public Library offers free career coaching at a number of community locations. Sit down one-on-one with a certified career coach or HR professional and go over your resume, cover letter, prepare for an interview, or refine your job search. To register please arrive at the library of your choice half an hour before the program starts. We only take in person registration for this program. Places and times can be found here: https://events.calgarypubliclibrary.com/…/online-registrati… =
4. Business Research Databases
If you are looking to build a contact list or complete market research on a local industry please use Reference USA: Canadian Businesses (https://calgarylibrary.ca/…/reference-usa-canadian-busines…/). You can find out how many companies are in a particular industry in a specified geographic area and learn more about details that are not commonly shared. If you are looking for industry reports and SWOT analyses go to Business Insights: Essentials for full text pdf downloads (https://calgarylibrary.ca/res…/business-insights-essentials/).
5. Services @ Your Library
With your Calgary Public Library card you are given $5.00 of free print credit to use each month. Print off your resumes, cover letters, and forms! As well, if you have a community group and need a meeting space you can book one for free at the library. Follow this link and select the library where you would like to go: https://calgarylibrary.ca/book-a-meeting-space/
