It's Time to... Fix The Gap.
Social Assistance recipients are living in the deepest poverty in Ontario and rates must be increased. Over the last several months the Poverty Roundtable and community partners have supported Bill 185: a legislative act to create an evidence-based process to help determine how much people need for food, housing, utilities and other essential costs in their lives.
The idea was presented as a private member’s bill by local Hamilton East – Stoney Creek MPP Paul Miller. Bill 185 received unanimous support from all political parties at second reading, 80-0 and was set to be discussed at committee at Queen's Park before becoming provincial policy.
As you have undoubtedly heard by now, the provincial government prorogued the legislature last week and set a new throne speech. Although they have kept their legislation going, they did not committed to keep private members’ bills and so Bill 185 died on the order paper...
The Poverty Roundtable believes that Bill 185 represented the first opportunity in a generation to fix rates and restore dignity for social assistance recipients.

The timing has never been better for passing this evidence-based legislation and we are hopeful that all political parties in Ontario will continue to support this important initiative...
