Latest News

In December we received a letter from the Department for Education (DfE) inviting us to an interview on 19 January 2017.  The purpose of the interview is to present our case for The Cavendish School and to answer specific and detailed questions about our plans.

You may recall that we had hoped the interview would take place
before Christmas, but the delay means we are now unlikely to learn the outcome until April.  If we are successful then the DfE will approve our application to progress to what is called the pre-opening stage.  The Secretary of State will not confirm an opening date until an application is established in the pre-opening stage.  We are busy preparing for the interview and will update you when we hear more.

In the mean time we have important information to share about recent developments that may affect the projected timescale for the new school.  The team that has been developing the new school proposal attended a briefing with the New Schools Network (NSN) in December. The NSN has supported us with our application since April and themselves work closely with the Department for Education on supporting free school applications. They informed us that if the Cavendish School is given the go ahead it is the governmental department called the Education Funding Agency (EFA) who will appoint the contractors to manage the build of the new school.  We already know that there are some significant site and planning issues here at Impington, and the EFA has also put in place some time consuming hurdles to overcome.  As a result, the EFA has advised that the earliest date that new schools who submitted applications in September 2016 are likely to open is now September 2019.
With regard to The Cavendish School this means we have been forced to make some potentially difficult decisions to revise our plans.  If the school is given the go ahead this spring, we may now have to work towards opening in September 2019 with a cohort of Year 5, 6 and 7, and Year 12.  The devastating news is that some of the students that we hoped to welcome to the school may no longer be of eligible age.  The option of extending the age has been carefully considered but unfortunately it is just not possible to do so.  We want to develop the right ethos in the school, and the right way of working to ensure that every student has the best possible experience for their individual needs.  Extending the age means compromising this approach.
The news of this delay is not the most positive start to 2017, but we believe it is important to keep you informed and aware of the difficulties we face.  Thank you for your continuing interest and support, and we hope to be in touch in April with more promising news.

Prospective Students

We continue to invite parents/ carers and students to express interest in a place at the proposed The Cavendish School in 2019 and beyond.  By expressing interest you are helping to demonstrate that there is demand for the new school, which is crucial for making the case to the Department for Education.
