The next RECKLESS book is coming very soon...

Okay, so Sean finished drawing the fourth RECKLESS book, THE GHOST IN YOU about three weeks ago... Here's the stack of pages...

Jake is now coloring away like mad as we get ready to go to print next month, while Sean is working on the cover to book 5 (the title of which I'll reveal in the next newsletter) and I'm just writing the first few chapters of said fifth book. So the machine keeps on running.

If you're a preorder your comics or graphic novels person, we're getting to the time to tell your retailer if you want THE GHOST IN YOU, which Sean thinks is our best one yet. And he and certainly Jake knocked the art and colors out of the park. I showed you the first chapter last time, so here's a few pages from the second one...

We're doing signed bookplates again, so check with your comics shop about that if you want to get a signed copy.

And I don't want to belabor the point, but thanks to every one of you (reader or retailer) who buy these books. The last few years have been so hard in so many ways, and if we didn't have the Reckless series to work on, I think I'd be pretty much in a misery-depression spiral most of the time. Of course, I started out trying to just have fun with them and they've turned into something else, a bit more meditative and dark at times, but I guess that's my idea of fun, apparently.

Okay, so what else is going on...? One of my Hollywood things finally got announced...
Although this headline makes it seem like I just got this gig, I actually have been working on it for several months, and we already wrapped the virtual writing room and are barreling ahead towards production right now.

I had no intention of going back to superheroes at all, but I was a big fan of the original BTAS show, and when this came along, it just sounded like it would be too much fun to pass up. And I was right. We spent a couple months on zoom for half the day, kicking around ideas and laughing and coming up with some very cool episodes that I can't wait to see animated. The show is a complete reimagining of the character, not a sequel to BTAS, but like that cartoon it feels like it takes place in a kind of timeless 1940s or early 50s - no computers, no cell phones, yay - and it's really pulpy. Hopefully more adult at times, but still something kids can watch too. Like the Marvel movies or Star Wars, ratings-wise, I guess. PG? I'm not sure what they rate things as on streaming actually...

Anyway, I think you'll all dig it, and it was a lot of fun creating this first season, and I hope we get to do several more. Here's a tiny photo of our writing zoom room, on wrap day...

Clockwise from top left corner - that's Halley Gross, writer and Consulting Producer (who I have now worked with on a bunch of TV shows), then Sean Lee, our writers assistant, Jase Ricci, coEP and writer, Julie Osborn our line producer (who was just popping in to hang out on the last day), Adamma Ebo, another writer and Consulting Producer, James Tucker, our coEP and one of the main designers of the show, Adanne Ebo, also a writer and Consulting Producer (pay attention to the Ebo twins - they've already made their own movie and have two TV series in development) and then there's me laughing about something, and in the center of it all, Bruce Timm.

I wish I could tell you more about the show, but Warner Bros is like Fort Knox about this stuff, so that's all I can share for now.

But just one quick note. I got a few concerned emails that this would somehow affect me and Sean's books or FRIDAY, and like I said, I've already been working on the show for months. I wrote most of the THE FADE OUT while I was on staff for WESTWORLD, and KILL OR BE KILLED while I was working for years with Refn on our TV show, and this hasn't slowed down anything on my comics writing either. So don't worry, the fifth Reckless book will still be out in October.
CRIME NEWS
Okay, time for some crime (or crime-related) news...

First up is this one, which made me laugh pretty hard...

And here we have an example of the kinds of things that are supposed to "stay in Vegas" ...

I linked to this story before, when it was a mystery, and now it's been solved, apparently...

This one almost seems too on the nose. The Darth Vader element really feels like a hat on a hat, as we say in the business... Crossbow or Cosplay, dude, pick one.

And finally, here's an article about one of my favorite old mystery movies from the 70s...

Okay, that's it for this time out. Send any questions for future newsletters to: criminalcomic@gmail.com and I'll see your inboxes soon.
