THANK YOU for joining our community! Arcomusical, an organization dedicated to the advancement of the Afro-Brazilian berimbau and related musical bows, is built upon five pillars of activity:

Publication & Recording
Community Building

In this very first monthly newsletter we have some great news to share: A Chamber Music America Commissioning Grant, an Innova Recordings album release, Chicago's Ear Taxi Festival, a series of Fall 2016 performances, a new instrument for sale and new compositions available, too!
Projeto Arcomusical will work with composer, Elliot Cole, to create "Roda" a new 15-minute work for berimbau sextet, thanks to the generosity of the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program.

Projeto Arcomusical is proud to be a Chamber Music America 2016 Classical Commissioning Award Recipient!

This year, Projeto Arcomusical joins the ranks of the many outstanding chamber music ensembles in the United States that have worked closely with Chamber Music America to develop excellent new works of music. At our 2014 performance at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, we were fortunate to befriend Elliot Cole, who expressed a strong emotional response to our work. We will work with him over the coming season to create, "Roda," a fifteen-minute work for berimbau sextet. Roda refers to Capoeira Angola, the Afro-Brazilian martial game that prominently features the berimbau. "Roda" means wheel and as such provides ample poetry and inspiration through not just the musical canon of capoeira but also its deliberate use of the term as a metaphor for the "wheel of life." The decision to name the work is a nod of respect to this noble tradition. Indeed, Capoeira's inclusion of the berimbau in its practice is, in fact, largely responsible for the instrument's thriving culture today.

MeiaMeia is complete!
Projeto Arcomusical release in October

MeiaMeia is a twelve-work composition cycle composed by Projeto Arcomusical members, Gregory Beyer and Alexis C. Lamb. "MeiaMeia" means "Half (dozen) Half (dozen)" in Brazilian Portuguese, and represents our equal collaborative effort. Both Greg and Alexis composed a series of six works from solo through sextet. We recorded the music in May of 2015 with Aphorism Studios. This first album will be released on Innova Recordings and celebrated with a series of performances in the fall of 2016. Recording engineer Dan Nichols created a preview track that you can hear on our SoundCloud page.

Projeto Arcomusical Fall 2016!

Highlights of our Fall 2016 performance season include a presentation at the inaugural Ear Taxi Festival, and an official album release show at Constellation Chicago. We hope to see you there!
Crafting a berimbau with David "Snappy" White
This past weekend (July 16-17, 2016) Greg, Alexis, Danna, and Kyle traveled to Janesville, Wisconsin to spend time in the home of expert woodworker, David "Snappy" White. White is the creative force behind the Arcomusical musical bows that Projeto Arcomusical used exclusively on our album, MeiaMeia. There, we were treated to a lively and in-depth explanation of the incredibly detailed work that White puts into each and every musical bow. From planing and laminating the wooden slats; to band sawing the shape of the tuning peg extension; to an incredible array of tools used to rip, sand, and polish the wood; we learned about every step in the process with the meticulous detail that is White's signature personality trait. Aside from being an unrelenting perfectionist, David is also an incredibly charismatic, humorous, and very classy gentleman. We could not be more proud to be working with someone who cares as much about his craft as we do ours.
