NEW STUFF:

I've got a new list just for the summer where I'll send out a little bit of cute, cool, or happy every Monday as a Summer Reading pick-me-up. You'll still get Think Outside the Stacks like usual. Sign-up for the summer list at www.thinkoutsidethestacks.com/smile

Here's What I Have for You Today:

Giant Sized Rhyming Memory Game (via Growing Book by Book)
Everything is more fun when you make it giant sized, including this game to work on phonological awareness.

A Checklist for Evaluating Diverse Children's Media (via Joan Ganz Cooney Center)
Librarian Claudia Haines has helped develop a terrific checklist for evaluating children's digital media.

Reading With Children Starting in Infancy Gives Lasting Literacy Boost (via Science Daily)
Early book sharing led to real differences in emergent literacy. Of course, we know this, but it's always good to have research to back it up.

Captain Underpants Craft Stick Bookmark (via Crafts by Amanda)
There is likely to be renewed interest in Captain Underpants with the movie this summer and this bookmark is a nice little tie-in.
Microphone Craft for Kids (via I Heart Arts and Crafts)
What better way to get little people to talk and sing than to give them their own sparkly microphone to do it!
Bullying is Down, Why Don't Students Believe It? (via NPR)
Bullying dropped quite a bit between 2005 and 2014 according to a recent study. I can't help but wonder if those results would hold since the 2016 election cycle started....

Teen Magazines Have Always Covered More That Fashion (via WaPo)
A brief look at how magazines for teen girls have been covering important issues including politics for a long time.

DC Comics to Start Its Own Young Readers Imprint (via I09)
Good news for little comics fans. The comics giant plans to introduce a new imprint just for young readers sometime next year.
How to Make Magazine Beads (via Red Ted Art)
A cheap and nice looking craft that was always a hit with my teens, plus it's a great tie-in with The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli since the main character makes her own.

The Most Comfortable Shoes as Told By People Who Are On Their Feet All Day (via Racked)
If you need some new options many of these listed are fairly reasonable for good shoes and some are even cute.

Slinky Painting  (via Fantastic Fun & Learning)
If you love doing process art and are looking for fresh ideas this looks like a lot of fun. Off brand slinky-esque toys can often be found at the dollar store or Five Below.

10 Ways Smart People Stay Calm (via Entrepreneur)
Ways to reduce stress and stay calm during stressful situations, like when things go wrong during Summer Reading.
Only One You Rock Pathway (via Scary Mommy)
Every single student painted a rock for their school as a reminder that they can make the world a better place by being themselves. Awwww.

Fun

A Dog and His Ball Pit

Broken Crayon Drawings (via Instagram)
Debbie Ohi's adorable drawings inspired by broken crayons.

Millionaire Bash (via Twitter)
This proud uncle showed off his nephew's school's Millionaire Bash for kids that read a million words during the school year.
