April 2019 Newsletter

Next Club night is on Thursday 4 April starting at 7.30 pm in Classroom 1, St John Ambulance Station, Western Hills Drive, Whangarei.

Tonight your images for the Photojournalism and Open competitions need to be uploaded.
We'll hear the results of the last competitions, Building Details and Curves, and also show and discuss last month's cropping challenge.

We need more Curves images for the interclub competition. Please upload your best to OtherCurves in the drop-down list on the website.

The visit to Herman Timber Company in Hikurangi for our last meeting was well attended, and plenty of memorable photos were taken – including of the resident Possum.

Thank you, Noel, for organising this.

Any cameras to sell?

Do you have an entry-level camera and lens you wish to sell? Pam has a buyer and would like to hear from you on

Another Challenge

There are no points for this challenge but there is a trophy and bragging rights!

Workshop Night: Portraiture

The next Workshop evening on 18th April is on Portraiture.

We will provide the models, you will need to bring you camera and an off-camera flash if you have one, or a torch.

If you have any suitable props, e.g. an old lamp, a pole, old book, glasses etc., then please bring these along as well.

Here's a great tutorial on how to pose and angle the body for better portraits from the Digital Photography School. How to pose for portraits>>

Club Outings

The Wild West Coast outing

The recent weekend spent at the Kauri Coast Holiday Park, went well, with a group of about 10 members.
There was plenty to see, including the Steam Punk event in Dargaville and a visit to both Trounson Park and Maunganui Bluff.
The holiday park was ideal, with a beautiful bush setting complete with a stream flowing past. Ravenous eels lined up to be fed each evening and there were glow worms under the nearby bridge.
We enjoyed beautiful weather on both days.
Could you please send two of your next-best images (not any you will be using for competitions) to asap, to make up a slideshow for Club night.
Winter Wonderland
June/July 2019

After a long hot summer, we figure you might be keen to try and find some snow. So we're heading down to National Park, probably staying in Pipers Lodge and will have easy day walks to the many gorgeous places around the mountains.

Tiritiri Matangi Island
August/September 2019

This popular trip to the bird-filled island of Tiritiri Matangi is held annually. Go on a day trip or spend a few days on the island to really get close to nature.

If you are interested in spending a day or weekend on this fascinating island, please add your name to the list on the front desk on Thursday night.
