Cropping Challenge

Here's a bit of fun to hopefully get you thinking about photo composition and how careful cropping can often make a big difference to your images.
This challenge is particularly aimed at all new members, and of course everyone else is welcome to have a go as we can all learn new tricks no matter how long we've been into photography!
STEP ONE: Download the image and save it to your computer.
STEP TWO: Open the image in whatever program you use to be able to crop it to your liking.
STEP THREE: Crop the image and export it or click File Save as and give it a width of 1620 pixels on its longest side as per normal camera club entries. Name it with your club number. If you don't have a number yet, just bring along a print or on a memory stick.
STEP FOUR: Print the photo out on photo paper or upload it to the club website if you have your login. We have set up a special category for this fun challenge.

Here are some online articles to help:

There are no points for this challenge but there is a trophy and bragging rights!

Workshop Night special outing

Our Thursday meeting on 21 March will be held at Herman Timber Company in Factory Lane, Hikurangi.
Please note the change of venue - we will meet at St John car park if you want to car pool or you can go straight out to the timber mill. Cars will be leaving the carpark no later than 7.15pm.
Photo challenge on this night is to take images inspired by these topics: Worn By Time, Simplicity and Repeating Elements.
  • Bring your camera and a tripod.
  • Bring a flash.
  • Wear old clothes (could be grease and oil about).
  • Cycle helmet if you have one (very easy to walk into ends of timber etc.)
  • Torch and/or headlamp, both would be ideal. Bring as strong a torch as possible for light painting.
  • Boots or good solid footwear (lots of things to trip over).
  • Cup or Mug for a brew afterwards. Tea, milk, sugar and biscuits will be there.
  • Tripod a definite for night photography.

There is a whole acre under roof so plenty of space to explore carefully!

Thanks to Noel Herman for hosting us at his business.

Directions

  • Head north and turn right into Hikurangi
  • Turn right into Factory Lane and drive over train line
  • Go through gate past silos and straight ahead.

Club Outings

Here are some fun outings to pop in your diary.

Northland's Wild West
March 15, 16, 17 2019

Join your fellow photographers for a weekend at the Kauri Coast Top 10 Holiday Park
The park has a range of accommodation options, including campervans, tent sites and cabins.
Nearby is Trounson Kauri Park, kiwi walks, Bayley's Beach and Kai Iwi Lakes.
Come for a day or whole weekend.

We've been invited to join with the Dargaville club and photograph a Steam Punk event.

Winter Wonderland
June/July 2019

After a long hot summer, we figure you might be keen to try and find some snow. So we're heading down to National Park, probably staying in Pipers Lodge and will have easy day walks to the many gorgeous places around the mountains.

Tiritiri Matangi Island
August/September 2019

This popular trip to the bird-filled island of Tiritiri Matangi is held annually. Go on a day trip or spend a few days on the island to really get close to nature.
