Our first newsletter!  We are pretty stoked to offer this very first newsletter from Speedibin!  There is so much going on in the grow-your-own-food movement and in organic waste management.  We would like to highlight some news and ideas, all with the intention of promoting backyard composting.

The BIG news is that we just launched a crowdfunding campaign!  Check it out!  If you like where we are going with the Speedibin business, this is the time to support us.  We realize that if we are to get backyard composting to become the common practice, we need help.  We have some big plans for Speedibins and could use a boost to get there.

If you were ever thinking of getting a Speedibin, either for yourself or a second bin, or for someone else who needs one, this campaign would be an excellent time!  And check out the other perks: an attractive stainless compost pail with the Speedibin logo; always useful garden gloves with our logo; a customized Speedibin with a wrap such as a picture of your garden; a new Speedibin, and other cool items.

New model with hinged lid

We are working on a second model of Speedibins.  This upgrade Speedibin will have a hinge on the lid so that you don't have to remove the lid when adding material. We are working with our fabricator in Abbotsford to design a lid that will be hinged and have a drop down support to hold the lid up while you are adding stuff or just mucking around in the compost, or admiring the busy worms. The spring-loaded hinge pins can be pulled to take the lid right off if you want, for example when emptying the bin.  We are prototyping now and expect to have the new model available by February 2017.  Any suggestions for this model?

We turned our compost over and it was red with worms. They are doing all the hard work.

Gardener's reality check

How do you know you are a Master Gardener?

  • There is a decorative compost container on your kitchen counter.
  • You would rather go to a nursery to shop than a clothing store.
  • You prefer gardening to watching television.
  • You plan vacation trips to arboretums and public parks.
  • Dirt under your fingernails and calloused palms are matters of pride.

"What should I consider when deciding the location of my new Speedibin?"

Make the location convenient. You are most likely going to have a few trips a week from your kitchen, even in the winter. Make it easy on yourself: set it up with easy access from the kitchen but not right beside your house.  If you place it in the sun it may heat up faster but may also necessitate more watering in the summer.  We have had better success in pure shade than in the sun. It needs to be on earth so that worms, microbes and water can transfer. Worms can’t get through concrete! There needs to be good drainage underneath so that water doesn't pool. Make sure that the ground is level with no rocks or sticks poking up the screen. Don't put it under a cedar tree or hedge where roots may infiltrate.  If you can, leave some walking around space on all four sides so you can access it and pests can’t hide behind.

Some insightful people set up their composter right in a raised bed. The soil under the composter will become luxuriously rich in life. After each batch of compost has finished its active stage, you can turn out the compost onto the raised bed for final curing, move the bin to the next bed and fill it up again. Brilliant!

Got something to add?

We see this newsletter as a collaborative process, our backyard composting community, so if you have questions or ideas for future editions, get in touch and let's share the wisdom.  Do you have a story or info to share with fellow backyard compost enthusiasts?  Meanwhile, do check out our Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. We sure appreciate the support!
