2016 in Review
2016 was a busy year for the Office of Farm to Fork. From developing the California Nutrition Incentive Program to supporting veterans learning farming skills, the Office worked diligently to support Californians in need of access to healthy foods and to expose the next generation to the benefits of a career in agriculture. The Office looks forward to continuing and expanding many of these projects in 2017.
Statewide Farm Tours
California Farm to Fork Asset Map
California State Employees Food Drive 

The Office of Farm to Fork hosted farm tours aimed at showing individuals where their food comes from and the diversity of our food system. Tours were held in Northern, Central, and Southern California. In 2017 the Office will continue farm tours with culinary arts student who are attending high school and community college programs. 

The California Farm to Fork Asset Map was developed out of a gathering of stakeholders, including key statewide implementing organizations and USDA representatives on July 20, 2015, to capture current farm to fork activities in the state of California. The document identifies assets as well as gaps in resources and programs. The asset map is available on the Office website

The Office is coordinating the State Employees Food Drive for the second year in a row. The food drive kicked off early with a fresh fruit and vegetable donation opportunity in September when many summer crops were still available. The drive continues through January, when totals are tallied and announced. To date, employees have donated over 300,000 pounds of food.

Farm to School Efforts
Communication and Coordination
California Farmer Marketplace

Committed to supporting and furthering farm to school efforts in California, Office staff worked with districts throughout the state including Pittsburg, Natomas, and San Diego Unified to help further their programs. The Office is gearing up to increase its overall farm to school reach and projects in 2017.

The Office expanded its communication tools by starting both Instagram and Pinterest accounts to enhance project reach. The Office also continued to promote statewide efforts to improve food access through the Tales from the Field blog and by participating in various committees and stakeholder groups.

The California Farmer Marketplace continued to expand in 2016 by connecting school food service directors and California farmers. The site operates throughout the state of California and was initially developed to break down the barriers that prevent food service directors from purchasing local produce. Farmers have posted items ranging from oranges and apples to chicken and tomatoes.

For the second round of Farm to Fork Ambassadors, veterans were funded at Archi's Institute for Sustainable Agriculture to learn about growing fruits and vegetables hydroponically. Student projects varied from developing bitter melon growing best practices to using farming to heal those suffering from PTSD.

The California Nutrition Incentive Program was established by Assembly Bill 1321 to encourage the purchase and consumption of healthy, California-grown fresh fruits and vegetables by nutrition benefit clients. The Office will partner with organizations across the state to distribute incentives and submitted an application for federal matching funding. 

The Office of Farm to Fork convened the Food Access Working Group to recommend actions to support improved food access in the Central Valley. The group, comprised of various community stakeholders, met several times over 2015 and 2016. A full report will be released in 2017.
