RTC TRANSIT SERVICES FREE ON NEW YEAR'S EVE!

Safety is the RTC's top priority, and for the 32nd year the RTC is providing everyone with a safe transportation option on New Year's Eve!  All RTC transit services will be free from 6 pm on 12/31/16 to 2 am on 1/1/17.  The RTC is reminding everyone to never drive while impaired and instead ride transit, take a cab or designate a driver.  The RTC encourages pedestrians to be visible after dark by wearing bright cloths and carrying flashlights.  Pedestrians should also obey traffic signals, cross at crosswalks and not be impaired.

Plan your trip at: http://www.rtcwashoe.com.  Riders may also download NextBus, an app that enables passengers to know what time the bus arrives.  The FREE app is available for Apple and Android devices.  Keep in mind not all locations are served by transit.

The FREE service is sponsored by: Renown Health, KOLO 8, Wood Rodgers, Inc., Club Cal Neva, REMSA, Morrey Distributing, Reno Firefighters Local 731, Washoe County Honorary Deputy Sheriff’s Association, Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority, Cumulus Media, the Northern Nevada DUI Task Force, and the DJ Benardis Memorial Fund.

GET 50% OFF YOUR BUS PASS WITH THE TOKEN TRANSIT APP

The RTC debuted Token Transit, a new app enabling customers to buy their bus passes on their phones.  The app is FREE and available for both Apple and Android devices.  Token Transit also enables customers to use their smartphone screen as a bus pass, eliminating the need for a paper ticket or cash fare.

As an incentive to try out the new app, for a limited time, everyone's first purchase through the app is 50% off!  There's been a strong response to the app and riders have provided positive feedback about the ease and convenience of the new digital passes.

RTC DESIGNATED BIKE FRIENDLY BY LEAGUE OF AMERICAN BICYCLISTS

The RTC is being recognized for its efforts to encourage everyone, including its employees, to choose sustainable and healthy modes of travel.  The RTC was designated a Bicycle Friendly Business by the League of American Bicyclists at the silver level.  The RTC is among 1,300 businesses and organizations across the country to receive the recognition.  The league considered the RTC's commitment to having bike amenities and facilities as well as on-going bike safety education efforts in making its decision.

In awarding the RTC a silver designation, the League of American Bicyclists considered accommodations for bicyclists at RTC facilities including bike racks, video surveillance for bike parking and a bike fix-it station at RTC 4TH STATION.  Moreover, the RTC participates in numerous events to educate employees and members of the public about bicycling safety – including Bike Week in May and International Walk to School Day.

Special recognition was given to RTC Planner Rebecca Kapuler by the Nevada Department of Transportation's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board as best individual supporter at the state's Annual Bicycle and Pedestrian Conference in October.  These recognitions are a testament to our commitment to creating livable communities and supporting alternative modes of travel.

RTC CHARITABLE EVENTS HELP THOUSANDS IN THE COMMUNITY

The RTC's recent charitable events were big successes, helping many in need this holiday season.  On December 7, the RTC partnered with the City of Reno, Washoe County Senior Services and the Reno Aces Ball Club to collect needed items for seniors.  The community stuffed an electric bus with the following items:

  • 34 bags of new clothing
  • 14 bags of winter scarves, hats and gloves
  • 3 winter coats
  • 4 down vests
  • 10 blankets
  • 12 bags of personal and household items
  • 7 space heaters
  • 10 assorted gift cards totaling $200
  • 25 RTC bus passes

Our transit riders also made the 24th Annual Food for Fare a tremendous success. 3,840 pounds of food was collected for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, providing 3,200 meals to many in the community.  The Food Bank serves more than 103,000 people every month and Food for Fare is one of the largest drives supporting the Food Bank each year.
