Starfish Malaysia Foundation (Q1 - 2016) Updates

So much has taken place since the start of 2016 and we are excited at the small progressive steps taken to help local communities in Sabah. Our team has expanded since, with new people on board to help with the agriculture and hostels projects. As we continue to passionately pursue the vision to educate, elevate and empower the people of Sabah, we are reminded of this verse - to continue persevering in all that we do.

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." - Galatians 6:9

Our first hostel is making good progress and things are looking up! Hostel Jasmine Talantang opened its doors in January 2015 starting with a small group of children and now we have 26 under our roof. Some of the children come from as far as Pulau Banggi, a journey that takes two hours by car and an hour on boat to get to, where there are no schools. Under the supervision of Ms. Anglene and Ms. Reddelin, they are provided with wonderful care and guidance in a safe environment to thrive in school.

We know that children are like 'sponges' and given the environment and opportunity, we want to sow lasting seeds in their lives to position them for a better future.

Please contact us if you would like to partner or support us in changing young lives.

We celebrated a significant milestone on the 5th of April, 2016 with the signing of an agreement with the Protestant Church in Sabah (PCS) to jointly restore, refurbish and 'breathe new life' into several hostels in Kudat and Pitas area. Our heart is to see the next generation of Sabahan's advance and recognize their role in shaping their own communities and nation. They can only do so if they are placed in the right environment to grow and develop.

This joint partnership is our first step in providing holistic care for our young people. Our goal is to make each hostel self-sustaining with a thriving veggie plot and sufficient fresh produce to harvest. Each hostel is independently managed by a hostel committee which consists of our staff, a warden, teachers, parents and community leaders. It really does take a village to raise a child!

We had an open dialogue with soursop farmers in Kampung Maatol earlier this year together with our ground partner, World Vision (Malaysia). Our aim is to improve their income stream by providing them the opportunity and a guaranteed marketing stream to sell their fruits at a more promising price. The dialogue garnered a lot of interest and we will continue to work closely with World Vision to see this take shape.

We have teamed up with Perpaduan Anak Negeri (PAN) a grassroots organisation focused on helping Sabah's indigenous in a corn farming project to improve the livelihood of local natives in Nabawan and its surrounding areas by growing corn for animal feed. It is estimated that more than 1000 acres of corn will be cultivated this year and plans to build a factory at Salarom Taka to process the corn is underway and projected to be completed when the first corn crop is harvested.

What started as an economic empowerment project for farmers in Kampung Mengkapoh, a small village 50 kilometres from Ranau township has come full circle. Twenty farmers participated in this project - they planted and harvested roselle which is more commonly known as "kampong ribena". Starfish supplied the seeds, liquid fertiliser, sprayers & water pump and bought the roselle fruits from the farmers at a lucrative price to help increase the standard of living. The fruits were then cleaned, fermented and bottled to make a healthy probiotic enzyme that is now for sale. Proceeds from the sale will go towards financing this project and making it self-sustaining.

A very prominent feature of the roselle fruit is that is it very high in Vitamin C, nine times more than what is found in grapes or blackcurrant. Taken as an enzyme drink, the bio-active, anti-oxidant substance can help to detoxify the body. It can also ease indigestion and lower cholesterol levels.

Our Roselle Enzyme is selling at the promotional price of RM70 until June 2016. RRP will be RM78 thereafter. To purchase this healthy enzyme, kindly contact Mr. Ho at +60122008165 or email to
