Starfish Malaysia Foundation (Q1 - 2017) Updates

Dear <<First Name>>,

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Starfish Foundation, we would like to begin with a big thank you to our partners, sponsors and friends for your incredible support throughout 2016. We could not have made it this far without you. We step into the new year with greater grit, passion and focus even as our projects and community efforts continue to expand. Thank you so much for being part of this exciting journey, and we look forward to continuing to work with you in the coming year!

We are delighted to share with you a comprehensive report of our current projects in Sabah in the 'Stakeholders Report' below. Read also about what we've been up to the last few months in the hostel and agriculture sector of our work. The year is looking very promising and packed for us and as always, we will be delighted to hear from potential partners and volunteers who want to do more. The need is great but we are encouraged that change happens 'one life at a time'.

"So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time, we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit. Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith." (Galatians 6:9-10, MSG)

It's a new year and a new beginning for Hostel Marigold Solimpodon. Over the year end holiday of 2016, the Starfish team with our contractors went to work on some major repairs and gave the hostel a face lift.

New toilets, freshly painted walls, thorough clearing of the land, new kitchen equipment, new beds, mattresses, tables and chairs for the students.

We also appointed new wardens (houseparents) to take on the role of caring and guiding the students. Our team is expanding and we're extremely grateful to have Joseph and Daini, together with their families join the fold.

After the first week of school draws to a close, we currently have 17 girls and 14 boys in our hostel. These youth range from 13 - 17 years old and they live in villages deep in the interiors. The hostel makes traveling to school more convenient and it is also a conducive and safe environment for them to live.

Exciting days ahead for Hostel Marigold Solimpodon and the youth under our care! We consider it a privilege to be part of this community.

During the school holidays, we took our Hostel Jasmine Talantang students to visit the zoo. They were super excited and couldn't sleep the night before. On the morning of the outing, the children dressed their best in dresses, heels, shoes and shirts. The girls even put on some make up because they were coming to the city! A rare treat for the kiddos.

The following day, we celebrated Christmas at Hostel Jasmine Talantang last weekend. The hall was decked with Christmas decor, parents and children came to join in the celebration and although there was an electricity cut midway into the party, there was no stopping the fun and cheer from continuing!

Anglene, the hostel’s warden gave a heartwarming speech to encourage parents and children to stay committed to path of better education. Our top student, Elkana gave a motivation speech to encourage other students to study hard. All our graduating Standard 6 students received completion certificates and fought hard to hold back tears as they hug Anglene goodbye.

Our first harvest of veggies from the plot of land around Solimpodon hostel. We have been incredibly blessed by this bountiful harvest. As a gesture of thanksgiving, we have chosen to give away this first harvest to the families living around the community. They were overjoyed (and so are we!).

Our goal in ensuring that our hostels will have adequate supply of veggies is slowly but surely coming to past. We are extremely grateful.

We are building Kapit Lighthouse Youth Centre in the heart of Kapit town in Sarawak. We learned about Kapit's rising social ills such as drug abuse, teenage pregnancies, increasing number of school drop-outs and unemployment and we saw this as an opportunity in disguise - amidst the cloud of problems. We hope the Youth Centre will be a beacon of hope and a safe haven for young people to grow and thrive.
In December, we had the opportunity to share on Starfish's initiatives and our hopes for the people and the land of Sabah at DUMC. Jimmy and Wee Lai had the privilege of sharing about our agricultural projects to empower local farmers and our hostel ministry to give children and youth fair access to education. What an honour to share the stage with Irene and Tuck Kow who run Dream Hostel in Tenom. Thanks to the team at the Teacher's Christian Fellowship (TCF) who helped organise.
