Hey there,

There’s only a couple hours left of GivingTuesday, and I want to make sure you saw this appeal from our Managing Editor, Kayleigh. In the email below she shares a great example of why journalism deserves a piece of your year-end giving pie. You’ve probably heard me say this many times, but today it’s more true than ever: nonprofit news is truly making an impact in Mississippi. I hope you’ll consider supporting it with a donation.

Always grateful,

Marshall Ramsey

Mississippi Today

Dear friend,

I’m sure this isn’t the first—or last—#GivingTuesday appeal you’ll read today, so I’ll make it quick. Today we’re celebrating #GivingNewsDay with other news organizations around the country by asking our readers to invest in local journalism that makes a difference.

Our newsroom creates impact, not just during award season, but every day by simply doing what we do best: holding those in power accountable on behalf of you, the public.

For example, until recently the Mississippi Department of Health was not reporting information on school-level COVID-19 infections. This prevented our education team from being able to dig deep, analyze trends and ask the questions that matter most to our readers. Our reporters decided to file a records request because the communities that schools serve deserve to know what’s happening in their districts.

Due to this records request, Dr. Thomas Dobbs announced MSDH would begin releasing this information. Without Mississippi Today directly requesting that this data be made public, students, teachers and their families would still have no idea about the levels of infection in their schools.

This kind of journalism that works for Mississippi, with Mississippi is more important than ever—especially when the health of our communities is at stake.

On this day of giving, we’re calling on our readers to support this work by donating to public service journalism that never stops reporting to you.

We hope to have 50 first time donors by the end of the day. Can we count on you to help us reach our goal?

I support the work you're doing.
P.S. Don’t keep #GivingNewsDay all to yourself! Celebrate with friends and colleagues by helping us spread the word and forwarding this email.
