Key education groups call Gov. Reeves' budget priorities hypocritical, 'extremely disappointing'

On Monday, Gov. Tate Reeves recommended limiting funding to schools that do not teach in-person during the pandemic and setting aside $3 million for a “Patriotic Education Fund.” Top education groups say his priorities do not address their needs.

Most Mississippi nursing homes haven't completed Medicare's COVID-19 training

Mississippi has the most COVID-19 infections per capita among nursing homes. Only 29 of the state's 211 nursing homes have taken advantage of the free COVID-19 training offered by the federal government to help squash transmission in their facilities.

The Metrocenter Mall in west Jackson opened in 1978 and closed in 2018. After months of uncertainty and plans delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, mall officials expect for the mall to partially reopen later this month.

New cases: 1,593 New Deaths: 20

The case count is the fifth largest number of new cases ever reported in the state.

COVID-19 Weekly Update: The seven-day new case average reached 1,143 today, a 54% increase since the start of November and the highest mark since Aug. 3.

COVID-19 in Schools Weekly Update: This past week saw the weekly number of students, teachers and staff rise sharply, with 1,546 people contracting COVID-19 the week of Nov. 9-13.

Mask Mandate: A total of 22 counties are under a mask mandate. The counties are Benton, Carroll, Covington, DeSoto, Forrest, Harrison, Hinds, Humphreys, Itawamba, Jackson, Lamar, Lauderdale, Leflore, Lee, Madison, Marshall, Montgomery, Pontotoc, Rankin, Tate, Winston and Yalobusha.
