Greetings from club president Joe Glover

New Albany Rotary Members and Friends:

It has been a joy to be the club president of the Rotary Club of New Albany these past six months.

My greatest pleasure has been to witness our club's enthusiasm, dedication, and sustaining spirit. Our members' flexibility, willingness to adapt, and giving attitude have been overwhelming during a challenging year.

For example, our club's dedication to our annual Angel Tree service project has exceeded all of my expectations. I have never seen such an enthusiastic and comprehensive response from a group of Rotarians. It would have been readily understandable if we fell short of our Angel Tree goal this year due to the pandemic, but instead, our club stepped up, and we had a record-setting year of support for children in our community.  In total our Rotarians have donated enough to adopt 105 Angels in our community.  I am so proud.

While we have already done so much as a club, I want to encourage each of you to personally think about a creative and new way you and your family can support someone in need during this holiday season. This gesture can be small, but you never know the impact of taking the time to help another can have on someone's life. There is not much we have been able to control in 2020, but this act of kindness is entirely in our control, and that is powerful. Remember… One Profits Most Who Serves Best

How fortunate am I to wish you and yours Happy Holidays, and I look forward to achieving even greater heights alongside each of you in the New Year.

~Joe Glover

Floyd Central Interact Club Remains Active and In Service
The Floyd Central Interact Club has had a great start during the first half of the school year.  Interact is Rotary International's service club for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting.

The club is meeting virtually on alternate Tuesdays as students are currently attending school through Floyd Central's hybrid schedule.  The club is using tools such as Google Classroom to meet, with an average of 40 students attending the meetings virtually.  Meetings are also recorded and students are also allowed to view them afterwards.
Meetings this year have included an introduction to Interact and Rotary, a program on Hispanic Heritage presented by a faculty Spanish teacher,  New Albany Rotarian Peggy Peters presenting a talk about polio,  and highlighting other clubs at Floyd Central.  At each meeting a Rotary liaison gives a “Rotary Minute” explaining areas of emphasis in Rotary.
The club recently held an “FCHS Quiz Bowl” to raise money for polio.  With the Gates Foundation match, the club projects to have raised enough funds for approximately 500 vaccine doses.  Students also wrote letters to veterans, thanking them for their service and delivered them to the local VFW.  This was accompanied by a presentation on Veterans Day by the club vice-president.

The Rotary Club of New Albany congratulates the students and staff of the Floyd Central Interact Club for an amazing start to the year!  We are all proud of the club's embodiment of 'Service Above Self'.
Rotarians Donate Food Baskets for Students' Winter Break
This month a group of New Albany Rotarians dropped off donated Winter Food Baskets at New Albany High School to help those with food insecurity over the upcoming holiday break. Great job Rotarians! And thanks to NAFCS Community Connection for asking us to join this great project.
Rotary International: Hunger and malnutrition unleashed by COVID-19 could carry the impact of the pandemic far into the future. Fortunately, there are ways to help from reducing food waste to supporting food drives and more.
